I think your bottle is new but the cap is from the 40's. If my memory serves me right and sometimes it doesn't we used those to seal our soda bottle when we didn't drink it all.
I see bottles are becoming more collectible. and I like the color of this one. I watch HGTV and another channel a lot and the decorators are using colored bottles.

Does your stopper look anything like these? I know the closure is different than yours but the principle is the same.

LIBRA: no, not really! PLUS: so far, Ralphie has yet to figure out how to get the damn thingy OFF the bottle, & I sure as heck ain't about to help!
Oeuoooew! Does he yelp when he breaks a dew-claw fingernail!

To open it, you lift the handle and it releases the suction on the bottle. My great-grandmother had this type of bottle sealer. Later on, my grandmother had a different kind to seal the bottles (a bit more modern looking in the 1960's than this one). If it's hard to get off, it could be because it was on for a looooooong time!

Tom: Use the word "amethyst" in the title (for the color) and you'll be amazed at the looks it'll get! You might even want to post it in the "amethyst glass" category.

bizzycrocheting has it right. There is probably a lot of suction on that cap. So Tomwii you have to wrap your hands around the bottle neck and use your Thumbs(both) and push up on the lever. Probably lots of suction and it will take more than Ralphies power to do it.
