I know there was a thread here, awhile ago about the buyer giving the seller their own or their companys fed ex account # so they wouldn't have to pay the shipping.

Now I can't remember if this was a 'negative' thing to do or not. I thought I remember reading that it was not a good idea

Well, my husband, he sells computers every now and then. He had a buyer in Canada use the buy it now, and then (the buyer) told him to use his companys fed ex account number, he emailed it to him, I believe, and he went and shipped it. He didn't tell me what happened at the fed ex place. But yesterday he said that Paypal had done 4 $10 charges, and he was really mad, he didn't think it the buyers fault but PayPal.... why PayPal? I don't know, I guess he had to show some kind of credit card or debit at the fed ex place....
(I really don't know all the details on that, only that he said, that the buyer is paying through his companys fed ex account, and he didn't see a problem with it, me; I wasn't sure, and told him)

NOW, I just got back, or returned the entire computer by a fed ex truck. I didn't read any of the stuff or documents, I'll let him do that! (I know he's gonna be mad!)

But does anyone know about this 'using someones or their companys account' for shipping. Or direct me to the thread about it.

Thanks!

Never ever use the buyer's FedEx account number to ship anything you sell, especially out of the U.S. What probably happened was the person got caught by the company who had the account when customs tried to hit them up with a huge bill and the company refused shipment and it came back. If you think your husband is mad now, just wait till he gets the bill from FedEx for the shipping charges both ways. It makes no difference whose account number is being used. If they refuse to pay or claim it was unauthorized, the shipper is liable for all transportation charges.

thanks sparkz, I figured as much... and I even tried to tell him (about reading here it wasn't a good idea) but does he listen to me..... no LOL, guys..... he doesn't sell much at all, he works full time, and does this very very seldom.
(oh the 'guy' remark wasn't directed to you ) just that he has buys 99.9% more than he has ever sold. So he doesn't watch for these things, nor read any ebay boards...

I do think it was customs.... something was on the package about it..... but I dare not open the thing...... I did warn him!

And I don't get the charges BY FedEX on his paypal account 4x of $10.

And yeah the guy is in Canada, with about 15? or so feedback.

Now I'm waiting to hear screams from his office here when he gets home, to see a chargeback or something from this guy....

Thanks..... I knew there was a thread about it, but I am no good at searching this board.

that paypal card does not work as well as the other credit cards.
it may just be temporaray authorisation which will go away in a week.
i know my gas station will do a 1.00 temp charge and come in later with the actual amount.

stopwhining, he thinks that also, some kind of 'verification' thing, that will go away in a couple days to a week.

I've had that happen a lot, in fact all the time, using it for gas, they'll do a $1. 'ding' but then it goes back into the account in a fews days or so. (and ALWAYS at the gas station, no where else)

The company I worked for about 5 years ago had a customer ask that something be shipped to her and billed to her Fedex accout. The package arrived where she had it shippied, but she did not pay her FedEx bill and her account became delinquent.

The unpaid bill always reverts to the shipper, since they are the ones who "hired" FedEX by having them pick up the package. We were stuck with the bill and since we used FedEx to ship our own stuff, we had to pay to keep our account open and in good standing.

NEVER ship on another customer's number. Get their money for shipping up front. If they refuse, there's something wrong with the transaction. Usually, they are either scamming you or the company who owns the account number.

Note to self: Don't use Fedex.

Note to others: Never use UPS.

Yes, there are others. Do your homework.

Unless the person is a crook, there won't be any problem. You are just as likely to get a paypal chargeback.
There are a lot of companies that will only ship on the customer's shipping account.

Note to self: Don't use Fedex.

Note to others: Never use UPS.

Yes, there are others. Do your homework.

What else is there? USPS is about the only other option and they are only good for small packages. No real companies use them that need stuff within a day or two.

Airborne/DHL? I sure won't be switching any time soon.

..i sell to dealers, and many times they request i use their account number, because it saves them money - with fedx or ups, you can do exactly what the threads express - and i can see where problems can erupt...
------------------------
..here is another way to safely handle the situation, and keep customer happy: tell the buyer to issue the pickup tag-when notified, all seller has to do is prepare it for shipment...your[seller] account doesnt come into play if you use this means...

<<Note to self: Don't use Fedex.>> Why not? I've been using them exclusively for over 2 years now, and have never had a problem other than a couple of damaged items which were rapidly settled to my satisfaction. I've done my homework and that's why I chose FedEx. Of course, I don't ship anything on another person's account either. I use my own. It is not the customer's place to dictate shipping methods to the seller after an auction closes. Alternate shipping methods need to be cleared with the seller before the bid is placed. I can think of no reason on this green earth where I would agree to ship an item on a buyer's FedEx account instead of my own account.

Some people get much better rates. I sold some stuff to a person at a division of Proctor and Gamble a few months ago and I used their account because they get a flat rate of $7.50 upto 8 Lbs with Fedex 3 day air.
