how I can go about finding a wholesaler to purchase patterns from? I don't even know where to begin in my search, but I would like to be able to purchase closeout and wholesale pattern booklets (preferably crochet) to resell. Would anybody be able to help me out with my search?

Find a couple patterns and then scour the back of the pacaging for the maker/distributer information then give them a ring. They will probably direct you to another company to buy smaller quantities from but there is no beter place to start than the top.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Go to Google and enter "wholesale crochet patterns".
Vary search string as needed. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

If you want older ones the thrift stores in their book section have them. Estate sales frequently have them. I have a friend that sells vintage knitting, crochet books and that is where she finds them. Usually around 50cents to a dollar. Have you tried your local craft store or pattern store for their discontinued patterns. Those patterns have to go someplace or do they throw them away? Sometimes McCalls and Simplicity have a large reduction on patterns. I bought a sewing pattern for 25 cents that retailed for $11.00. Try JoAnn's or Hancock and see what they can do. You never know what is there if you don't ask. Good Luck
