Did Ebay change the rules? I see lots of these listed:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4003850085&category=306

They are offering a free cd copy of the lp. Free and optional.

Lot's of others are doing the same thing, but I thought that was a no-no on Ebay.

here ya go

What they are doing is legal, as long as they do not have any more copies in thier possesion after they get rid of the original.

AIN'T LIFE GRAND...

Thanks.

I thought Ebay forbids copies even with the item? If they have changed that policy I will get triple what I expected when I go back to selling my record lps!

Linda - there are some sellers that use it as a ploy. They list an original with a copy then offer lower shipping if the buyer just wants the copy. Most of the time this is done with PAL videotapes or DVDs. Seller lists a PAL version from europe with an NTSC copy (PAL will not play in US machines). ONce the auction is completed they offer lowe r shippingnor a discounted price if the buyer just wants the NTSC version. Since a copy costs less than $1 to make usually, they eat just eat the extra fees in exchange for the higher profit margin.

The ones I have seen are in the record lp's and even 45's. They just state it is legal to own a copy if you have the original and one will be included if you want it.

I know that will make my lp's more attractive to buyers, and I have a Phillip's free standing that would make it easy to make them. I could sell in groups of 2 lps instead of 10 and make a lot more money. But, I don't want any problems with Ebay over anything I do because I have two storage units stacked to the brim with stuff I need to sell.

Edited to add that one of them is filled with over 6,000 lps and 30,000 45's

Disclaimer: I just finished a consulting meeting with one of my design clients on marketing his new business so I am in marketing mode right now. I hope you don't mind a few ideas.

I am basing this on the capabilities given by AuctionWorks, Vendio may or may not have them but this is what I would do.....

I would take, say, five 45's of a single artist, group them together into a single lot and include a CD of A & B tracks from each 45. I would do 4 or 5 lots for any given artist before listing a lot. Create an inventory item for each lot. In Works you can select other inventory items that are referral items. They are now set up with ebay that when a customer clicks the Pay Now button that normally would take them to PayPal it now routes them thru the Works check out then takes that order to PayPal. When your customer goes to the check out it will show the selected referral items down the side of the check-out page. (they are in your store which is included in their monthly fee rather than being an add-on module). Now your customer sees other items that are specifically selected to their interest hopefully bringing in additional sales sans ebay fees.

Have your store linked to a custom URL, have cards printed up with your URL that you include with each item. If you do a search under "Club Flyer Printing" you will find companies where you can have 5000 full color two sided business cards printed for usually about $150.00 With your inventory - you would just burnmoney printing 500 at a time or burn time and money buying stock and printing and cutting your own. If you can't find someone let me know - I can route them thru my printer (they are not online and ony take trade clients) Build your inventory even if you are not going to list every piece at that time. Give people a reason to come back and check out your store.

You can do the groups and set up the listings and burn the CD when the item is ordered. Get some 9 x 12 envelopes and put each lot in a numbered envelope then store them in file boxes. Build your listings and use the envelop number as your item number. When you do the sale then all you have to do is pull that envelope, burn the cd and ship (then cross out the inventory number on the envelop and reuse them for the new lots until it falls apart or you run out of inventory- then have a ceremonial burning of the envelopes party). This method also allows for you to set everything up without moving them from your storage unit. Give the hubby, kids, yourself, whoever, a box of envelopes and a notebook. Have them put together each set and write the songs and the envelope number in the notebook. You can build your inventory from the notebook and grab actually items from storage when they are sold so that you don't end up feeling like you live in a used record store. You can also make it a weekend project. Spend the weekend at the storage unit making lots and filling up the notebook then you can create the listings during the week.

By doing lots you can use marquis pieces to sell commons. Have one or two rare pieces grouped withh three or four common pieces that would normally be difficult sales.

Of course you can also do theme collections, spooky stuff for Halloween, Christmas songs, Love songs etc.

Let me know if this makes any sense. I was coming up with the ideas as I was typing so who knows.....

::Wow! I feel like I owe you a consulting fee::

Nah, it would just freak Reamond out. No one would actually hire a consultant for ebay related sales

You are quite welcome, Sometimes it helps to have a "disinterested" parity's viewpoint. I think if I was looking at over 40,000 pieces of unique merchandise my brain would freeze up at the sheer enormity of the task. It's like most people garage or basement. You know it needs to be cleaned but when you walk in there you have no idea where to start so you just never do. Sometimes you just need o see it thru a different set of eyes.

Good luck!! Let me know how it works out for you.

BTW - if you don't want to do the cards you can also set up a template for the front cover insert into the thin CD cases. If you use legal sizes paper you can fit 3 to a sheet. You can put the cd track list on there and a tag line at the botton along the lines of "This custom CD was created for you at lindajeanscd.com (or whatever you want to call it).

If you don't want to spring for the plastic cases, you can also use Tyvek sleeves with an Avery label attached to it with the same info.

I buy the thin cases in bulk and will use them.

All of your ideas were great, but the sorting and numbering from the storage unit was the one that will actually get me to start listing these

I have brought several boxes to the house, tried to sort through them, had records everywhere and stuck them back into my closet

Now, with paper, pen and boxes in hand I will spend the weekend at the units finally getting a start on it all. The 45's came from a used record store and many of them are duplicates so I will be able to put 5 or 6 by artist, make the cd, and have multiple sales from just one listing

But, the task of getting it all organized just stopped me in my tracks last year. And, once boxed ready to ship they took up a lot of space. If they didn't sell first time around then these little boxes were stacked everywhere here.

I love your ideas. If you want to check on progress, or just keep in touch, drop me an email at [email protected].

Yeah right.

Just curious, how are you set up to digitally record your record collection for burning onto CDRs ?

I'm guessing it was an eBay no-no because the auction has since been terminated!

Many of the records I personally like I already have a cd burned for them. I have several 100 each cd players (turntable, jukebox type) and just let them play.

I don't like TV or movies Those are the records I will keep so I am still "legally" allowed to have the copies.

I just thought I would offer the same thing to my customers if they wanted it when I sell off the records I don't like or no longer want.

I bought a Phillips stand alone recorder several years ago. Play the record into it and record. If you want tracks you do have to sit and click the track button between songs because it will not pick up the spaces if there is any noise whatsoever.

Here's a few more We'll see how long they last:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4004456001&category=306

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4004460379&category=306

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4004190560&category=306

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4004325786&category=306

And there are lots more. The last one is from a seller with over 4000 feedback rating.

Rather than picking on legal copies that go with it I wish they would do something about all the lps that are shrink wrapped by sellers and sold as new. Anyone who ever bought records knows the difference but lots of people are obviously fooled.

And, here's one that is obviously illegal:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4004693117&category=306

They will send a cd they copied with hard to find songs by artist when you purchase one 45

I didn't mention I also have over 4000 8 tracks and another 2000 cassettes.

I thought the cd copy idea would work great with the 8 tracks since they are so fragile and easily broken as well as the difficulty in finding and maintaining players.

So you have a Phillips stand alone CD burner that converts analog signals from a record player into a digital format ?

Reamond - Recorders are different animals than burners. Lindas Phillips recorder is the audio version of the Panasonic Digital Video Recorder which allow you to record Tv shows, old Video Tapes etc onto DVD.

Yes, and it does it in real time as you listen to the record or 8 track or whatever.

Old mono recordings do not sound very good but I found they are improved if you remove one of the rca plugs forcing all sound into the white one like you are supposed to Still, those aren't really worth listening to if you are like me and spoiled to today's sounds.

Luckily, most mono recordings are collectible in and of themselves so they sell pretty good as it is.

For those who have never listened to an 8 track, you would be surprised at the quality. It is very close to the quality of a digital recording. Of course, they break at the splice, they get "eaten" by the machines, and that loud "click" as they change channels made them obsolete almost before they even started. Still, my cd copies made from them are excellent quality.

It sounds like just the ticket for salvaging your old analog media into digital copies.

What formats will it output digitally? I assume it does CDDA, but can it output mp3 ?

Mine won't. I don't know if the newer ones will or not. I bought mine before the word MP3 was in the vocabulary

But, I hate mp3's so that's ok with me

Somebody on this board is very powerful and has a lot of pull with Ebay.

Just hours after posting the information (just for others to view so they could give me their opinion on whether they thought I could do it or not...not to get people's auctions pulled because I don't do that) then all of the items listed are now invalid numbers.

Good thing I didn't try it. Apparently it is not allowed under any circumstances. Each of the sellers listed had different statement regarding the cdr but all have been pulled
