At the P.O. today they said from now on anything going media mail has to be unsealed when you bring it in so they can check it. Then you tape it up after postage is applied. Too much abuse of media mail, apparently.

Well then how do we mail the packages from our home. I will seal my packages leave it for the postlady to take it. If they open it they had better seal it up again and as nice as I did when I did it. Can't they tell by the package and the weight of the package if they should open it or not. Say I mail a large box that weighs only 4 pounds, by that indication they should realize it is not books. Oh well since I don't abuse it I am not going to worry.

Our postal clerks are wonderful and they know everyone in this little mountain town, so they don't check; they trust us.
By the way, I have mailed boxes of books I've sold in a lot, several times, and the package weighed between 5 and 12 pounds--media mail. So the weight alone won't tell the clerk a whole lot.

I go to the same little PO 4 times a week, so I hope they give me a break on this. Probably one clerk will and one won't.

This really depends on your post office. Mine is small, I ship hundreds of packages a week, and mostly media mail. They did tell me that any package shipped media mail can be inspected anytime. My response was that I hoped they do this, because since everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) I ship does qualify for media mail, it hurts me when others ship items media mail that don't qualify for it. It means that when the rates rise again, I will be hit harder with higher fees. I think they should enforce their rules.

The PO guy told me that at whatever gigantic place undelivered mail goes, when they opened items to find where to send them there were just too many with media mail postage that simply weren't. I'm glad too that they are working on this abuse. The abuse just will cost all of us more in the long run.
