Has any body had any luck running 1 cent auctions? Do you bump up the S&H? I am thinking about doing it for sports card auctions and would like some opinions. Thanks!

I don't do 1 cent sales but I would think baseball cards would be okay and yes I think they up the shipping charges. You have to make money someway and with the postage they don't pay eBay. Depending on what you want to make on a card but don't put the shipping to high as it would only cost you 37 cents to mail it and those buyers know it. There are quite a few items I would start at 1 cent. There is a CD seller that starts their CD's at 1 cent but I can't remember their name. There is a thread here about them. It gives your auctions interest. My opinion.

We run weekly 1p auctions on certain collectible on eBay UK, and most end up with 20+ bids at an average closing price of over £100-190 depending on the item and scarcity. If the average selling price drops or our competitors over supply the market, then we may pull out and let them drive the prices down. Or flood the market to flush them out
Depending on the item and market availability 1c or 1p auctions can be great money makers since all the bidding drives up prices and brings in a steady stream of new customers (especially to our website!). Our website prices are slightly lower than eBay's but more profitable to us as buyers tend to purchase more items direct than via eBay sales... YMMV

My 11 yr. old son likes to buy Trading Cards on eBay (completely under my supervision!). He uses his own money.
He has learned quickly to check the shipping costs in an auction and we will not bid on one if the shipping is over $3.00 for one card.
He thinks if they are cheating him on the shipping costs, the quality of the card may be questionable too. (He got burned twice and learned the hard way).
His exact words are..."I think this one's a crook Mom. It doesn't cost that much to mail a card."
Since we also sell on eBay he understands the whole "handling charge for mailers, etc. and understands that...BUT he does look at the package/envelope when it arrives to see how much the seller actually paid to mail it.
Most of the time he looks for sellers offering a flat shipping rate for up to 'x' amount of cards won.
Just offering an 11 yr. old's buying perspective.

I looked at some XBOX games for my kids found some 1 penny auctions and don't ya know the shipping was $20.
I looked at some earrings for 1 penny and don't ya know the shipping was $20
found some jeans 1 penny and shipping $20 these were kids jeans by the way-
~~~All were power sellers~~~
And for the record I did find some other sellers- non power sellers selling items for a penny with a huge shipping price as well but by the next day- those auctions were gone
I think it works because people are foolish. There are three reasons for this
1) Some people don't actually look at the terms of the auction - They will bid on multiple auctions and want them combined, or simply don't look
2) Some people don't factor in the shipping cost - These are really fools
3) Some people want to brag to their friends how savy they are on ebay. Look, I got this CD for only 37 cents, and it is worth a lot more! Of course, shipping is $8, so they really pay $8.37 but they get to brag how great they are.
I've done all sorts of experiments with shipping prices, and I am comfortable with shipping prices being somewhat above actual shipping, and trying to get back other fees (ebay listing, paypal) in the handling charges. That seems to work out best for me.
Spam and fee avoidance...ebay's blind spots.
I've often marveled at hookstreasures auctions, that start at .99 ... he lists 40 or so items per day ... i pulled up all of his auctions for a 30 day period not long ago, and counted roughly 7 or 8 thousand dollars in sales
Funny. I looked up hookstreasures auctions and when I did, I got popups from Bidville. They got past my popup blocker. Hasn't happened with any other site. Just eBay.
