Here's a laugh for today...
I have a book listed this buyer is interested in, so she emailed me through "Ask Seller a Question"...
"I collect Native American items and travel to schools in Washington State to share them with 4th and 5th graders. I do this for free. Last month I started collecting Native American books, movies, music, e-books & Native American childrens game for a Teachers lending library. This to I do for free. If this book does not sell would you consider donating it to my Non-profit Native American cultural school program? Thank kindly for your consiteration, Many Blessings"
So I replied...
"Thank you very much for looking at my auctions, and also your email!
It sounds like you have a wonderful program with children, which is very admirable! I just checked to see what all you have purchased on eBay, and noticed that you do bid on and win quite a few Indian related auctions, including books.
In all honesty, selling on eBay is my living - so can very much appreciate funds being tight. I welcome you to bid on the book if you are interested...
Thank you again, and hope your week is off to a great start!"
To which she replies....
"I can fully understand. I work a part time minimum wage job to buy a few items and books. A good amount of the bids on e-bay were privet arrangements between me and the seller. I would bid a very high price with the sellers permission. If the bid does not get out bided they would send the item/items for free or just the price of shipping. I do not except cash for my non profit program. With the kindness of others I am able to help thousand of children every year. This year I am scheduled for 14 schools and the number increases every week. I have been traveling to schools for 5 years. I let the Native American items speak to the hearts of the children. My classes are hands on. I have about 500 native american items plus a tipi. I am just starting the lending library. It is need badly here. I am trying to collect as many Native American books, music, movies, e-books and posters before next school year. I do thank you for your consideration. If you know somebody who has any Native American educational items they don't want could you kindly tell them of my needs? Many Blessings,"
Happy Tuesday Everyone!

I don't believe the sellers are filing FVF - if they were this buyer would have been long gone. She has over 500 total feedback, mostly positives with "fast payment" in the feedback. She also sells, but it looks like she buys more than she sells.
She pays very nice prices for the items she wins, and many of the items she has outbid others to win. There are some at just the opening bid amount, but not very many.

Not out of the woodwork -- this nut fell from a tree.
I just had someone from Italy offer me a great deal on a digital camera (which I was bidding on, but losing on eBay) - if I wanted to send them the money via Western Union "but don't provide the MTCN" until I receive the camera. Then, when I told him I wasn't comfortable with that, just send him half (witholding the MTCN again) and then provide that detail once I receive it.
I just pictured myself taking hundreds of dollars and throwing them out the window - hoping this man was honest and sends me a camera... <sigh>
Yeah - the nuts abound!

I almost admire the chutzpah.
Borrowing from another thread, here's the way NOT to close a bargain price with a seller at a garage sale:
While looking at several solid wood card cabinets (which libraries used to use to hold their card catalogs...remember?), the browser declined to pay the $15 asking price, saying "But I wasn't going to use them for that."
Oh, OK. If I go shopping for a two carat diamond but promise not to use it as jewelry, I can have it for $5? Yeah. Wow.
I gave the seller her asking price and hauled them off while the guy watched, consternated.
More to your point, wgm, I used to have a 386 computer (hey, it was current *then*) for sale...$800, I think. A female Stanford law student wrote me and said that she was darned near broke but could sure use a computer in her studies. Would I donate it to her?
I, like you, wrote a reply much kinder than the request warranted.

if seller said she returned the item and does not neg her, ebay has nothing against such transaction.
this is not like shill bidding, this is between two unrelated parties.

This probably isn't very nice, but my first thought was "Don't they have casinos in Washington State?". I know here in Minnesota much of the casino profits go to support heritage programs like the one this lady says she is sponsoring. Maybe I am in a suspicious mood today but her story sounds rather fishy to me! I think you handled it well wgm!

Okay, Stop. Explain to me clearly why this is not shill bidding.
She sent an offer to wgm. She said she does "privet arrangements between me and the seller". Then if no one outbids her, the seller sends her the item free or for the cost of shipping.

I sell some million dollar bills on Ebay....had an e-mail the other day....
Is this real money?
Yikes...to think we spend billions of dollars looking for intelligent life in outer space...
Here's another..not Ebay related...but why would the Government want to REMOVE "under God" or "in God we trust"...if they do that, wouldn't it mean that they would now have to WORK on Sundays/Christmas/Easter,etc.

Received a check as payment today from a buyer with a SASE and no s/h...not even enough postage! He never sent an email saying this was his plan and did not send a note with the check.
He paid more than the starting bid for the postcard so I am tempted to let it go. I checked his feedback and he buys a LOT of postcards and is willing to pay very good prices for them(some with stated shipping prices higher than mine). He has no NEGS or mention of failure to pay s/h....GRRRRRRRRRRR!
Don't want to block him because if he is willing to pay 2 or 3 x's opening bid I sure could eat the shipping and handling..but STILLLLLLLL...it BUGS ME!
