Find the path to the subdirectory that has the files. Drop to the dos prompt and cd\ to that subdirectory. Type dir and hit enter to verify that you are in the correct directory. Then type del *.* and type y at the verification prompt. It may take a while if you have that many files, but they will be gone. If you prefer to do it in windows, you need to go to Windows Explorer and highlight small groups and keep deleting those groups till they're gone.

I have heard you guys talking about this before but didn't know what you meant. Thanks to you I have now dumped stuff that was dated 2002. I also have lots of 'cookies' on there should I dump them too or will that mess something up. Thanks! Harriett

Harriett...By all means, dump those cookies. The only thing you will notice is that sites that "remember" your username (such as Vendio, Ebay and Yahoo) and/or password will have those fields blank the next time you log on and you'll have to re-enter that info.

i used to think i had cleaned these out and when i would run a virus scan, it found over 80,000 temp files.
to get rid of them i had to go to accessories> system tools>clean disk...and run that. it wouldn't even run the first time, there were too many. had to take the computer to the shop to get them cleaned out.
now i have it set to delete those whenever i close my explorer window....makes life much simpler for me.

There is an easy way to do this. Go tpo Program, click on accessories, click on system tools, click on disk cleanup. Works like a charm. I use it at least 1X a month. Clean out the cookies, they'll be back.

you both sooooo right...this morning, i ran the disc cleanup before defragging the c drive...the first message i got was: "it will take a few minutes to calculate how much disc space you will gain." I KNEW I WAS IN TROUBLE!!!!!
-------
few minutes later i got this: "disc cleanup will free up 1,360,306 kb of files...i couldnt count them...
-------
it took 48 minutes to run the disc cleanup.
-----------
as an afterthought, i hope our friends have more knowledge than me...for instance, i noticed that one of the major "clogs" was my recycle bin....it contained over 700,000kb[this is over half of the unecessary] "dumped" files...
------------------
its safe to guess:
one can dump and dump and dump,,,
but disccleanup is the only way to "dump the dump."

tanx again, myoldtoy

When you use Windows Explorer to delete files, you need to hold down the shift key when you strike delete. Otherwise it will just move them to the recycle bin.

Now make sure you run Defrag too! That might take a while also if you don't do it regularly.
one of the things I dislike about MicroSoft is their defrag. Mine was so bad last time I ran it that it wouldn't even decently do it. I tried the 30 day trial version of Raxco PerfectDisc and it rocked! It will super defrag your computer. Wish it didn't cost so much, I'd love to have it.
About cleaning out the old files? That in itself is one of the main reasons I like SpyBot and also I have Window Washer. It makes it so easy to keep a clean computer.

I can't believe what I have just read!! OMG, don't you people ever read any of the bulletins put out by Micro Soft? I have been doing this for years. I don't always defrag, but if you haven't done a disk clean fo a long time, I really recommend it

I never do these manually except for SpyBot (I can't find a way to have SpyBot run by itself). Other than that my cleanup programs are on scheduled tasks.
I schedule Tune Up - Norton - Scan Disk - Clean up disk and defrag on a daily or weekly basis. Usually in the middle of the night when I'm asleep.
This way I don't have to remember to do them and it keeps my comp clean.
If you don't know how to find this program: Go to My Computer, click on scheduled tasks - click on "add scheduled tasks" and the wizard will take you through how and when to schedule comp maintenance.
It works for me because I don't have to try and remember to do these tasks.
Also, you might want to stick a note on your comp to delete temp files, cookies and compact your email folders when you log on every am.

Capolady,,,,,,you said, temp files, cookies,,,,,,,Aren't they the same thing and if they are not, how, where are these cookies? I thought temp files were the same as Cookies? maybe I have not been cleaning out cookies,,,,

all of your temp files are not held in internet options.
if you go to windows>programs>accessories>system tools>disk cleanup you will find a lot of hidden temp files. running disk cleanup gets rid of these.
i now have mine set to delete all temp files whenever i close my internet window. all that leaves are the cookies in internet options which i have emptying automatically everyday.
