Just got a phone call from a local friend who has NEVER bought [yet] on ebay, and she is gung-ho to buy one or two Vuitton purses ... she was asking me for advice ... well I know nothing about them but started looking them over in different ways at ebay .... are there fakes on ebay? and if so, are they good fakes, or rather, poor quality. ....... i see one that she bid on is located in Macau ... cripe, i had to google to find out that's a Chinese country ... ...

Other than me telling her CHECK THEIR FEEDBACK, and their location, what else should I tell her? ... thanks.

edited to add: i notice there are "lists" for sale on ebay, that people can buy to get wholesale vuittons ... that is what makes me think there are fakes out there maybe? ... OR should she just buy one of those lists and buya ton of vuittons from a wholesale supplier

Real Vuitton purses are made of leather and have the LV signature on them with a serial number on the key lock or closure and a LV brand in the leather. She can expect to pay about $100.00 and up for wholesale prices, but they are worth the investment. The fakes look bad imo. They're made of vinyl with leather straps, etc. Look for the word "authentic" in the ad and don't buy from overseas as they'll probably be fakes. Hope that helps ARY!

Macau is next to hong kong, was one time a portuguese colony, now like Hong Kong,is part of China.
You bet ,it is a fake.

There are some very good fakes but they are hard to find and the better the fake, the closer they cost to the real thing. The rakes have serial numbers, the locks etc but tend not to have the dust bags or receipts. Of course some of those sites also sell receipts (I have even seen Rolex registration papers for sale on one site the sold fake Rolexes). Don't rely on feedback numbers, check the feedback, see what people are saying about quality.

Personally I think the cost of LV bags is ridiculous and generally see people that carry them as being a little desperate but that's just me. I grew up with a grandmother than always said that is she was going to walk around covered in someone elses logo they damn well better be paying HER.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

your grandma is right.
it is easy to tell if a person is wearing the real thing, all you have to do is take a look at the rest of the person,do the dress, hair, shoe, jewelry, makeup etc match the handbag??

I know someone who collects Louis Vuitton purses etc and buys/bids on e-Bay. Think she has wound up getting more fakes than authenic items but pays with PayPal and has her credit card company do a chargeback as soon as she sends the item back to the seller.

I think I might have learned this from the link Tsunami posted.

One thing you'll never see on an authentic Vuitton is any seaming that interrupts the LV part of the logo.

Makes it a bit easier to spot a fake when all you have to look at is a picture.

This is great information. I shop thrift stores often and they think everyone is the real deal, but they always look cheap to me. Now I know why.
fenix - I think I would have loved your grandmother. She had the right idea. I love finding designer items for a dollar and selling them for hundreds. As my grandmother would say "rich people have more money than sense" Does it matter if a pretty scarf cost $20.00 or $400.00???

Actually, old-money people don't buy "designer" stuff, much of which is actually made in China on production lines right next to the stuff destined for KMart. It's the middle-class wannabes who are plunking down hundreds for those ugly Louis Vuitton bags. To the wealthy, Louis Vuitton is so thirty years ago.

The Wall Street Journal ran an article on a Palestinian immigrant who lives with her mother and spends all her salary on luxury handbags. The names are also very popular among young Chinese and Japanese around here.

I used to buy one Coach handbag every couple of years and wear it out. Now that they're made in China, I don't any more. American craftsmanship in leather goods is getting harder to find.

What is it with handbags? I don't understand why they're so important. Is it hormones? Kinda like teen-age boys and their loud cars with loud stereos?

I have two. One black, one blue. Both are nice leather, good names and quality but not high-style fashion designer. About every six or eight months I switch, mostly because it's time to clean it out anyway.

How this little 'saga' is ending: Ho-boy.... I feel real badly how this all went for my friend ... after playing with being outbid often on the LV purses she wanted, she decided to go for Dooney & Bourke bag instead, (item 3481293436), because they're similar in design but sell for a little bit lower price than the LV's .... she ended up winning one for $140, paid with e-check thru paypal, and I was so proud of her for finding a seller, who AT THE TIME, had a good amount of great feedback, so I figured she really picked a good one ... however, from the day she won her auction, that seller went downhill big-time racking up oodles of negs and neuts, then making her feedback 'private', and now as of this morning, is naru'ed! ... from what i gathered, the seller had just recently set up with a remote dropshipper for the D&B bags, and apparently things went haywire ... I just feel for my friend, because she of course will NEVER bid on ebay again ... I think she is trying to go through the paypal complaint process right now.

Unless you have your hand on the bag and can examine it then I would not buy one.

I sold a Cartier bag about a year and a half ago. The date in the purse was older and it probably was authentic but I didn't know so I put it on eBay but in my description I said I didn't know if it was real or fake. Someone bought it and when I received my feedback she did say it was real. Purchase price $140.00, actual price of the purse $500.00 She got a realy good bargin and a beautiful purse. I made good money on it also. We have a goodwill in the area that gets quite a few Dooney and Burke purses and they sell them for $50.00. I buy my purses at either Garage Sales or Thrift shops and discard them every couple of months. We have a thrift store that gets quite a few new Liz Claibourn's and they only charge $3.00 a purse.

Lucy: I'm with you! I don't understand the purse thing at all. I have a black microfiber purse (I'm blanking on the maker right now but it'll come to me) with two zipper compartments front and back, and a main one. I buy this new every 2 - 3 years; it's washable, it's perfect for my stuff. I have a small black leather shoulderbag for "best." I have 3 or 4 more leather ones in navy and black which I've had for 20 years or so, hardly ever use them, and I'm sure the Clean Sweep bunch would make me sell them at a yard sale!

Have you ever seen some of the bags sold on QVC or HSN? bright colors, light colors, loud stripes, etc. I don't get it. They'd get dirty fast (maybe that's the idea for the manufacturer). Status bags are a mystery to me.

I suspect, though, that it's a lot like the shoe thing for women. Again, I don't have a lot of shoes! Someone suggested a while back that overweight women buy the handbags and shoes because they can, and because they fit, as a sort of consolation prize. I dunno. And maybe it's the same with all the jewelry?

Adele,

I think you're right about the overweight thing.

I have exactly four pair of shoes and two of them are the same style New Balance. Come to think of it, maybe I should buy something different for my son's wedding...

aintrich -- I'm sorry to hear that. I hope she can get her money back.

I have original Fendi and Dooney Bourke purses that my sister gave to me. They sit in my closet collecting dust. The Fendi was bought in Italy and has a matching wallet. But these were all bought a few years ago, so I don't think they are worth much as they aren't en vogue right now.

I admit, I'm a purseaholic. Some women goes nuts over shoes, I go nuts over handbags. I have dozens that cost anywhere from $10 to over $100. I recently decided I'd check out the Louis Vuitton handbags on eBay, and am surprised to see that so many sellers of LV, have little to NO feedback. Of course, that makes me nervous. I found one that I really liked, and at $125.00 it was one that I could afford. However, the seller had 0 feedback, and I just can't bring myself to click the button. I know we all had to start somewhere, but to send that kind of green to someone with no "referrals", I just can't...

she could be an experienced seller who is selling under a diff id or she has been suspended and now using a diff id to sell.
take a look at her pictures and description and email and ask her .
there are new sellers coming to ebay every week, they could have attended some shows and decide on selling certain brands.
look at her listings, what else is she selling??
paypal has an insurance coverage for item not as described.

We were at the Great Mall yesterday, and I noticed a handbag store going out of business. It had tons of LV fakes and other crap.

Could be the fake market is oversaturated.

With so many fakes around, I wonder if the value of the real ones will diminish?

Lucy: I wonder if you and I were separated at birth?!! I too have New Balance shoes--the only everyday shoes that are good on my feet. I have the #842 and #77something (I forget the exact number. I wore #841 for ages but they discontinued it. My husband has the #77 something for men and says it's the most comfortable walking shoe he's ever had. We go down the mountain to Palm Desert; there's a New Balance store there--or I order from one of the online sellers.

My friend tells me she received her purse in the mail last Saturday ... at least she got her purchase, but can't leave feedback because of the NARU status of seller.
