This is an old scratchy blanket with a very strange marking woven into it ... it is approximately 5' x 7' and has buttonholes along two sides of it ... and of course, the anchor and the "wording ... I have tried ebaying and googling some variations of the words here [because the 2 words on the bottom either contain a C or a G??? [the G in Garantie has a bit more pronounced little flag in the middle, i think] .... what the heck is this???? AND does it read across the edge, or rather top word/bottom word then other top word/bottom word? ... tia!!!!!!! ------- AintRichYet

In German the word Garantie means Guarantee. Maybe Dr. Gustov (Spelling) Jaeger? It is German. Prof. could mean anything. No clue there. Maybe he was a ship's doctor? Is it wool? They used wool blankets on ships a lot. I think it had something to do with wet and cold, but I'm not sure.

Maybe the blanket was hung? Maybe it attached somehow to a uniform so that it would stay around the shoulders? Hmmm.

Well, the buttonholes go all the way across the edge of two opposite sides of the blanket ... some of the buttonholes seem hand done or hand repaired ... this "wording" marking is only along one edge of the blanket ... [and as i said, i think it is wool]

In Germany, they used to button their sheets to the heavy duvets (comforters)they had on their beds. Frequently these buttonholes were handmade so they could be aligned properly to match the duvet.
Your piece may have been made to button onto a duvet.
