Just went to list in my usual catagory, and it AIN'T NO MORE.
159 thousand items in pottery and china!
"Important Notice: Pottery & Glass Category Structure Changes

In order to give buyers more flexibility in the search/browse experience and enable them to find items more quickly and efficiently, we will simplify the Pottery & Glass category structure during the month of June. Please note that in order for your items to be listed and located successfully, you will need to use Item Specifics in the following categories after the changes go into effect:

The new category structure will be reflected as follows:

Pottery & Glass > Glass > Art Glass (id# 988)
Pottery & Glass > Glass > Glassware (id# 17)
Pottery & Glass > Glass > Stained Glass Supplies (id# 4770)
Pottery & Glass > Pottery & China (id# 94)
Pottery & Glass > Wholesale Lots > Pottery & China Wholesale Lots (id #60102)
Pottery & Glass > Wholesale Lots > Glass Wholesale Lots (id #60101)"

Incredible. So they are going to mix the Royal Copenhagen, Homer Laughlin and Syracuse restaurantware all together in one big box and shake it up. And if a bidder doesn't know the exact name and pattern i.d. he'll never be able to find it. And if the seller doesn't have the exact information, he's wasting his money trying to list it. Might have more hits on an auction for a teapot if it were listed in Ebay Motors.

Oh, Lordy - why? why? why? I wonder if we still have to fill out the "Item Specifics". Oh, Oh, just checked and we do. Maybe this is the alternative. It was much easier the other way as once you knew the number, you just put it in and pushed enter. Progress is a wonderful thing or a PITA

Ebay is rolling out (or should I say rolling up) their grand master plan right on schedule.

There are only a few more categories to go, then it should all be done and you won't have to worry anymore about it.

By Christmas, they plan to have just one big master category on eBay, called 'STUFF', when you click on any auction listing, it will just be in the 'STUFF' category, along with 10 million other items.

Happy browsing, then -- or as Meg Whitman says: GO STUFF IT!

There is an old saying that I wish EBAY would learn- that is " IF IT AINT BROKE- DON'T FIX IT- They change the things that have worked well into convoluted messes-can't figure it out- I guess as long as they have the only game in town it will continue that way- too bad

A man who'd run the library system in a large city, years ago, told a friend who worked that, in confidence, that sometimes he just got bored with doing things the same old way--the way that they actually worked--and he'd just monkey with their methods for the heck of it. I think of him often these days. . . .

I suppose whoever came up with the idea to lump all books into fiction & nonfiction came up with the pottery & glass changes! I just checked out the pottery & china changes - currently 156,955 items found in Pottery & China! No more browsing is right! I used to frequently browse by pottery category.

I think your right - soon it's be one big category- or maybe 2. One for used stuff & one for new stuff.

Reminds me of how every so often the supermarkets 're-arrange' the aisles.
Always just about the time you know exactly where the things are you need to get in and out. Apparently, doesn't leave much room for impulse buying and I guess they don't like that much

I bet the jewelry and watches categories will be the next to be screwed up. Sigh. I'm not listing right now, partly because of the summer slump and partly because I broke my left arm and wrist. Typing is difficult, to say the least! I have been looking to buy, but the pickings are slim in the antique jewelry categories. I'm not the only one that isn't listing.

Hi Earthmum, sorry to hear about your arm. Must be a royal pain for sure! If I were up in NY I ask to sign your cast!! Maybe in pink marker!! :0)

I am home this week with bronchitis myself and its sure is slow going trying to do anything. But like you said since sales are down maybe its a blessing in disguise not to be listing and throwing away fee money. My inclination is to do it while I have time so I am putting around as much as I can get to pictures taken, etc.

Hi Neroter - thanks for the kind words. I could use some decoration on the cast, it is so grubby looking. Probably because I planted flowers. Comes off on June 22 - I can't wait. They already changed the jewelry categories a couple of times, not for the better IMHO. If they do what they have done for Glass/Pottery, it will be a disaster. I was searching for a pattern of Early American Pressed Glass, and was horrified that the category was gone. eBay was so much better four or five years ago.

Re; not being able to find pattern glass category to browse...

Go to "browse" at the top of any page...
from the list that comes up click on pottery and glass...from the list that comes up click on 'glassware"...when the screen comes up there will be side bar that has "glassware finder" with several dropdown boxes below it...go to the box marked "style", when you drop it down select "Early Amer pattern" and you will get the pattern glass category.

Hi Sharron - thanks for the tip! Guess I have to re-learn the categories and how to search. Like Neroter said, it's just like when the grocery store changes things around.

Who benefits from these categories rollups ?

It must be the large retailers that want their items viewed and would like to place them in large generic categories.

Browsing is how I find things that I never knew existed and it follows that I would never do a search for them.

But browsing is nearly impossible with these huge rolled up categories.

This really ticks me off. As many of you know china is my specialty. Hell, #94 has always been Noritake. I never had to look it up. Now I am not sure what is going to happen.

Thanks Sharron - now I see why they wanted us to fill in the Specifics. This is tedious to fill out each time if you have a lot in a pattern, (unless they have a default somewhere I missed). It all makes sense now. Actually it gives the buyer more items to look under in case they don't know the pattern name, etc.

eBay!
