I don't buy much on ebay but was going to get something for my husband and run across 2 different sellers who said "they only quote shipping to the winner" WHAT?? I didn't see one's statement and requested shipping to which he never replied. No sale so I wrote and told him I was still interested but what was shipping or at least where did he live as it was not listed. He must have thought I won and wrote back the following:

Thanks for your bid. And yes, we did see your shipping request but we have given up on doing that. We receive so many that we would have to hire a "Shipping Request Filler Slave", so we just send the info to winning bidders. Narrows the field.

Is it me or is the nuts???

He must lose a lot of business. There's no way I would bid on anything without knowing what the seller would charge to ship. Considering all the threads on gouging, I can't imagine buyers leaving themselves open to this avenue for potential abuse.

What does his feedback look like?

The solution to this is,,,,,,,and I too have burned out on these all day long requests,,,,,,

UPS is the shipper, weight is 10 pounds,,size is 15 x 19 x 12. 92802 California.

They are TOO lazy to do the SAME thing they want US to do.

Solution,,,,,,,We charge EXACTLY whatever the Shipper wants,,,,plus our packing (handling) rate. say, $9.00, stated!.....How much clearer can we get? Whatever the SHIPPER wants seems fair as WE sellers have NO idea where the widget is going to end up.

and STILL what do ya get? how much is Shipping? AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

He had over 150 with one neutral.
The item was some kind of type which could have been shipped book rate.
The other seller had over 1000 w/ 5 negatives

Jack - he didn't give his location and just because UPS charges $9.00 doesn't mean he will - he could charge $40 for all I knew.

I just love the "narrows the fields" - translation = loses sales??

if his shipping is excessive,he runs the risk of budder refusing to honor his bid.
is his starting bid too good to be true??
may be he wants to see what the final bid is and quote a shipping so he wont lose his shirt.

Shipping calculations have been easily made available. Just like a reserve, lack of shipping knowledge is not acceptable to a large percentage of eBay bidders. So, a short tutorial is in order for----

HOW TO AVOID PACKING AND SHIPPING:

* Start your auction at the amount 'others just like it' have recently sold for.

* Put a reserve on your auction.

* Use ambiguous shipping terms such as 'buyer pays actual shipping', and never use a shipping calculator.

* Make your feedback private.

* Have a TOS statement that rivals a cell phone contract.

* Use condescending terminology that assumes everyone else is an idiot, or a cadence like an algore speech.

* Refuse to respond to bidder questions.

* Use all capitals in your listing.

* Don't use the gallery option, in fact, don't use pictures.

* Describe all items as vintage or use rare in all 20 auction titles for identical items.

* Use dark letters on a dark background, or light letters on a light background.

* Put 'floaties' in your auction to grab attention.

* Hype up square trade in your listings, plant the seed of doubt.

* Insist on one form of payment.

* Beg for sympathy for your pet that might get cancer.

Please add to this post if there are any other valuable tips on avoiding the onerous chore of actually closing an auction that I have missed.

parklane! Brilliant.

Don't forget "my spouse/wife/grandmother is FORCING me to sell!" (boo-hoo)

and then.."my husband had a heart attack so I must sell his baseball cards" "Its a million dollar collection that is be sold dutch for $4.95 for ten card lots" (sounds like a grieving spouse!) Wording or pictures have not changed in 5 years. Same revolving auction with same moronic bidders! I LOVE IT

parklane: LOL

Also, describe how you have been mistreated by buyers in the past and use this as a reason why you have such strict TOS.

Parklane,

LOL!
Add to your list:

"Picture Says It All" is only text in description, and picture is either the size of a postage stamp or too blurry to understand. Or the picture is sideways, so you cock your head to one side like a puzzled Ralphie trying to see it!
