It looks like a Union Civil War soldier, especially the hat on the ground. It is obviously a Union or USA memorial with the American flag on it. Funny, the photo looks like Confederate General Robert E Lee.

Thanks all. I thought is was a union soldier from the civil war also. I doubt if the designer of this card made the flag according to hoyle, as many do.

He could be a civil war veteran. He looks older than an active service man to me... maybe a member of the Grand
Army of the Republic. I have seen photographs of GAR events and memorials where they dressed in uniforms. That would explain the flag having more stars.
All of my great grandfathers with Confederate vets and they were active in their company organizations well into the
20th century.

That is a Union Army Uniform, but I agree the man looks too old & the flag is not correct for the 1860's. Most likely a vet at the turn of the century. My grandfather fought with the Illinois Volunteers with Sherman on his "March to the Sea" Was discharged after the taking of Raleigh, NC & sent home in July of 1865. He was born in 1848 & ran away from home & joined the army at age 16. He was 54 when my dad was born in 1902.

Not into postcards but, there was a 50 year reunion at Gettysburg around 1912-1915, don't recall the exact year. Because the gent in the picture is on the grey side, this postcard might have had something to do with that event or one of the other reunions at famous Civil war battle sites that are still memorialized.
