My computer is very slow. My ISP thinks I might have spyware and it is slowing me down. Does anyone know of a "free" spyware program. I downloaded one ran the scan then couldn't do anything until I paid for my free service.

My Problem: I dial on and wait for my home page to load. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I ran housecall and I have no viruses. Then I ran that "free" spyware which showed lots of programs but can't remove them until I pay for their product. Since I mainly use this for eBay I would like to clean it up today if possible.

Thanks

Won't Norton take care of that??

no, Norton virus protection is just that, Virus protection. It will not block spyware as I came to find out pretty quickly. In a previous thread numerous people recommended Spybot. I tried it and it works very well. It finds all spyware and allows you to kill it. Run once a week it is very effective and very user friendly.

Clean out your cache (temporary internet files and temp files), Run Spybot Search and Destroy (if you have a pc - they don't have a mac version) and run the free version of ad-aware. The free versions work fine. Use both of these softwares, not just one. Run one and then the other. If that doesn't speed up your computer and you are using a dial up, try a different dial up telephone number. That may help as well.

If you have a mac, clean out your cache and then try a different dial up phone number. I think there is atleast one type of software like spybot for a mac but I can't think of it right now. Hope this helps

Thanks all. I did clear my cache and what I could of the temporary files. You can't imagine how many temprary files are left after you disc clean so I am doing them by hand. Now does anyone have the URL for spybot and adware? I also searched for that this morning and couldn't find it. Probably right in front of my nose but I have been up all night trying to fix it.

Clearing you cache: Go to tools in the bar above click on that then click internet options and there you can clear your tempoary files, your history files and your cookies if you want to. I cleared everything.

I have to leave for awhile because my hair looks like Phillis Diller and it needs major work. I will be back to see what else there is to do.

Libra, if you have a lot of temp files, you can run clean disk again. it sometimes takes more than once to clean them all.

Also, what kind of connection do you have? is it cable by any chance? I have to reset my connector modem everyonce in a while because it slows down and that is the problem. I just unplug and plug back in to reset. got tired of the techs making me dance through my system changing everything. Resetting does the trick for me.

Hi all,

This might not have anything to do with Libra's problem but I'll post it anyway.

A month or so ago, after a momentary power outage (less than a second) my download time slowed to a crawl. I have a cable modem.

The tech at my ISP (Charter) did everything he could do from his end including resetting my modem (which I'd already done)

He was ready to send a troubleman out but as a last chance he walked me through a system restore. Worked like a charm - everything came right back up to speed and no problems since.

Worth a try??

Spybot, since the other link is not clickable.

Be sure and read the tutorial and it will walk you through on what to turn on or off.

If you still have any questions I can highly recommend the forums over there. They are very helpful and quick to answer.

Be sure and download JavaCools Spyware Blaster while you're over there. It's under the links catagory http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html but it works in conjunction and within spybot but permanently blocks a lot of bad IP addresses and keeps that junk from downloading on your computer to begin with etc....

No I just have a dial up. I think the tech support thinks I am crazy. I think in the past 3 days I have called tech support 5 times and telephone repair 2 times. Everytime I call they tell me something different. The only thing that matched was that I might have spyware on my machine. After I run this program and it isn't fixed I will call them again. BTW in order for me to get any web pages I have to disconnect every phone in the house. Doesn't seem right. Well before I run spy bot I am going to the store and getting peanut butter M & Ms. Maybe that will help.

Libra...You just answered the question. Before you do anything else, follow Glasgrl's links and get Spybot S&D and clean out the spyware on your computer. If it's still not up to snuff, move the computer to the phone jack closest to where the phone line enters the house and try it. This will allow you to determine whether the problem is with one of the phones or with the wiring inside the house. The fact that you have to unplug all the other phones to be able to log onto a web site indicates there is a large amount of resistance on the line. I'me betting one of the phones, or the cord leading to it is bad and will have to be replaced. Also, check and see if you have any outside phone jacks, such as on the patio or in the garage that may have gotten contaminated with dust or moisture.

before i went to cable, my computer had all kind of problems with the dial up. i would get knocked off the web after 2-3 minutes, when i could get on. the techs came out 4 times before they found a short in connection. soon as they put in a new jack, i was fine as dial up can be.

good luck Libra, let us know what you find out.

Well my problem is solved....after hours of no sleep, lenghy talks with the tech support. Running Spybot and believe it or not I had 1 file and it didn't need to be removed. When I was trying to get a web page the time out page came and I read it and it said call your ISP and ask about the connections. Needless to say we had been talking about them all week. Well I got a very nice smart tech guy. First thing he said we need to check your modem. In October I put in a new modem and downloaded the softwear and everything was fine. I didn't check any settings just kept on working. Well today when we checked them in the dial up networking it said I had a Rockwell modem and in my connect page it said I had a US robotics modem. There is the problem. All I had to do was change rockwell to robotics and everything is fine. Now I can sleep tonight and know everything is good. I did leave spybot on and the tech said run it once in a while. Thanks all for your help as always you guys and gals come through. I am so glad that I am not the only one who has problems. As I said before I loved my webtv....

The next time that "any TECH Guys" give you the run around and you feel you are getting no-where....tell them that this error code keeps coming up....

Say..."I keep getting this "ID ten T" error...." see how long it takes them to figure that one out....

you'll be surprised when you do the first immunize at how many cookies it blocks - or is that the spyware blaster? I get them confused, they're both on the same page in Spybot. It's just as important as running Spybot IMHO.
