I am tried of being dumb but when everyone talks about clearing your cache, is that the same as clearing your Internet file and history from your control panel? I did something one time but using the find folders and files but tech support from ebay helped me step by step.
How often do you need to do this?
Also how often do you need to update Windows.
Thanks in advance all you smart guy at there!

What version of windows are you running? You should run the critical updates any time they are available. With Windows 2000 and XP there is a setting in the control panel that you can set to automatically run. It will search for updates and download them. You can select to have them automatically installed or to notify you when it's time to install them etc (that's in windows 2000) I don't think windows 98 has this function. Windows XP is a little different. Hope this helps.

"clearing your cache, is that the same as clearing your Internet file and history from your control panel?"
- yes it is. You can also do part of it from your browser. In internet explorer you go to TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS - then select Delete cookies, Delete files
- You should also delete your temp files.

No, it's not the same as your history.

All the History is is a list of sites you have been to. If you've been somewhere and don't want a record of it (don't want your wife/husband/parents catching you on the chat rooms or porn sites) then you might want to delete your history.

To Clear your Cache:

A) In your browser, pull down the TOOLS menu and click on INTERNET OPTIONS.

B) The middle section is for TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES.

C) Click on the option to DELETE FILES.

D) You can Also DELETE COOKIES from the same screen if you want to.

This is NOT going to make any difference if you have spyware in stalled, but it might speed up your system if you've never done it before.

Oh yeah- if you do step (C) above and have never done it before, it can take a LONG TIME. Be patient, your system hasn't crashed.

I am using Window 98.
I have been doing this so I guess I'm ok. I'll try to do it more often as I do a lot of research.
Thanks

In W/98, go to Programs-Accessories-System & bring up clean disk. This will bnring up a box that will show youall of the internet files, trash bin etc.follw the directions & voila! you have cleaned up your junk.

Wrong again sanmar. That step you are talking about is after you clear your cache. Doing your step only clears your trash and temp files. The steps laid out earlier is the proper steps.

When you clear your cache, you are only deleting the temporary internet files in one directory. If you go into Windows explorer and examine the temp internet files directory, you will see that those files are duplicated in 4 or 5 other subdirectories. To get really clean, you need to delete those files from each directory manually. To be really squeeky clean, do it from the DOS prompt and use the attrib command to get the hidden and write protected files that some renegade sites may deposit there.

another thing somebody might want to know is if you are using internet explorer version 6.0 and up -i think, in the advanced tab you can check it to clear temporary internet files each time the browser is closed. Then you wont have so many temp files backed up on your hard drive. You have to scroll down to about 3/4 of the list to see it.
