One of the porcelain pipes I'm selling this week has this verse on it. Not sure if we've read the Gothic script exactly right, but I'm hoping someone here can give me an idea what it says. A clue might be that the picture is a hunter in the wilds. I could make out only one word, for mountaintop. Anyone?

My husband says it must be some kind of dialect..it's not Swiss German dialect at any rate. It begins with "the Deer in the Valley...."but after that he can't figure it out..sorry.

Thanks, Neglus! That's a good start, and I'll put that in the description. It does look like a dialect, not true German. I tried to look up some of the words and pretty much struck out. Thank your husband for me, please.

The only part I can make out is the first part which reads "Surgeon General's Warning". The rest refers to something similar to "male erectile dysfunction" but I can't say for sure.

Any way you slice it, you won't catch me smoking that pipe. You better use a blurry picture if you list it. On the other hand, with a good picture you might have a bidding war amongst a bunch of tired housewifes looking for a good night's sleep and a gift for hubby

I've been playing around with it some in babble fish and got this after a deer in the valley
"And s ' Gams ausen points and alus lig's lives is ` s over at game prat protect"
which doesn't mean anything really but maybe you can change a letter or two or space the words out for the rest of it like I did with the last word..lol at least theres a few more english word in it now

Hey, , "gams" is an old slang word for legs, and "prat" is slang for idiot or a**hole. You could make your "translation" a lot of fun...

I don't pretend to speak german (even after 21 years of hearing the swiss dialect)I do spend a lot of time trying to figure out what the heck they are saying..I wonder if it means something like: the deer in the valley, its legs to its points (ie: antlers?), how happy life is, when you can shoot them??? lol

Fun, isn't it? Two years of college German for my husband and me, and we still can't figure out this dialect. . . I suppose it has something to do with either shooting a happy deer or being happy while killing one. Either way, yuckkkkkkkkkkkk.
