I am trying to clean up my computer as I am going to get road runner. What I want to know is if I can delete my DAT files in my temporary file. I also have temporary files that have a date from two years ago. Are they okay to delete? Thanking you in advance.

"Temporary Files" are just that, temporary & can be deleted anytime. I routinely use disk cleaner to get rid of cookies & temp files.

When I try and delete this folder in my temporary files it reads.
Cannot delete index axcess is denied.
Make sure the disc is not full or write protected and the file is not currently inuse.
This is the file that has a lot of uned space. Is there anyway to delete it? O
Thanks I deleted everything else but this doesn't go away.

yes I think you will always have that one in there. don't worry about it.
If you're trying to hand delete them, move that one out of the way, either at the top or the bottom. You can just drag it into position.
"The temporary internet files folder, history folder and cookies folder contain a file called index.dat. Windows uses index.dat to keep a coded record of the files in the folder where it resides. Windows will NOT let you delete index.dat! If you delete the files in these folders through any Windows method, you are still left with the index.dat containing all the info you thought you just deleted. So much for deleting your tracks! This file can become completely bloated, not to mention corrupted, since it won't match the actual files in the folder. The index.dat file can only be deleted in DOS and are included in your cleanup using the DELTREE command."
you don't say what you're running.

Your file that states it is write protected is likely a file that is in use at the time you are trying to delete it. Try closing all files, folders and programs including the internet. Then try again.

Stone...The index files are true write protected files. The only way to delete them is to drop to DOS, use the attrib command to change them to normal unprotected files and then delete them. It's not a fun thing to do.

here's a freeware program I found through spybot forum that will automatically delete the .dat files. it looks like it will do the trick. be sure and read the help file that's included first! I didn't download the program but read the help file and it will walk you through step by step on how to use it. It looks very safe as long as you follow the directions. It includes being able to defrag from DOS?

I think I am going to leave it as it is. although it will clean up a lot of space. I can screw up a 1 car funeral so I best leave well enough alone.
Maybe I can find someone I know that knows how to do it but as of now with the deletion of the rest of the stuff in the temp folder I did free up a lot of space.
Thanks all.
