I'm selling this necklace for a dealer friend of mine. I know what it is, but I haven't a clue where to start it!!!! I asked him, but he said to start it at what I think I should. Now that's help. If anyone can stear me right, I'd appreciate it. I'm afraid that if I get too little he'll be upset and if I ask too much it won't sell. He also knows it's old but not how old.

FYI: It has 18 carnelians, 6 rock crystals, 84 citrine, 182 small silver beads and two large silver beads. The center is 2-1/2" long and 1" wide and drops 3". It weighs almost 6 ounces and is solid silver. If that's any help. Oh, it's a 16" necklace.

I'm in over my head. Sure wish Fluffy were around!

Thanks to anyone who can help! I need to get this listed. The description is all ready, but the price isn't.

Cheryl,

I did a quick eBay search (as I'm sure you already have) and didn't see anything remotely close. It did appear that carnelian/silver jewelry didn't sell particularly high but that doesn't mean much. There's not very much listed that's not new.

Yes, I wish Fluffy were around too. I miss her.

Maybe you could send her an email??? I think her email addy is in her Vendio ID.

Lucy

Edited to add: Any marks on it?

I'd really hate to bother fluffy. I know she's busy with other things. Not a mark on the thing. My friend thinks it's probably one of a kind. It probably has some meaning in India. Wish I knew what that was. It's difficult when you don't have anything close to compare it to.

My daughter designs and creates jewelery in CA. Can you give me a link to send to her. Maybe she could give an idea on what it is worth. She works with all these stones and silver too

Any ideas? It looked like something from India to me, but do you think it may be from somewhere else perhaps in the middle east?

Hi,

It doesn't look Indian to me. The jewelry I saw at a party last year (Gujarati) was more delicate.

A lot of the necklaces the ladies were wearing had individual strands of beads suspended from the main strand but didn't have the breastplate.

JMHO

I did find out it's called a Jhaalar Necklace and it is from India. Here's a new one that's fairly close:

I think that's as close as I'm going to get.

Well, Cheryl, your original question was where to start it. That depends on your friend's perception of what it's worth. Did he give you any clues?

Since this isn't the absolute greatest time to be selling on eBay, it's hard to say what kind of action you'll get. A reserve might be a good idea.

I'd describe it as ethnic. What ethnicity is another story. But if you get it into the right category it will do better.

It's very pretty!

Lucy

You're right about selling on eBay right now. It's a crap shoot, really. One week I do very well and the next - nothing, zilch, nada. Maybe I can convince him to hold out for a while. Bad thing is, I stand to make 50% on this one and I need the money more than he does.

When in doubt, I always ask the consignor what is the least amount of money he's willing to get for the item. Then if his low price is too high, in my estimation, I would want him to pay for the listing fees even if it doesn't sell.

Carnelian does have its followers. Our daughter prefers it to more expensive birthstones for Aquarians.

Adele's right. You just gotta get some kind of number out of him.

If it's unrealistically high, have him give you an advance of your fees. That way you're only out your time if it doesn't sell.

Have you done a search on Tribal jewelry? There you will find some pieces with this same look and some are asking some pretty high prices (not always getting it, unfortunately) but that's ebay right now
You may want to go off ebay and get a feel for prices there.
I have a book on silver jewelry I'll look in later to see what type of value these type of jewelry may bring.

My book on silver jewelry shows nothing just like this but if you go to the Middle East & Central Asia section, you get the closest look to this. Persian, Turkish, or Afghan look the closest. Persian, Tribal, Nomadic and Central Asia seems to be a good group of keys words.
The Tribal pieces seem to be listed as high as $300.00 on ebay and aren't as pretty as what you have but will they sell at that price? Who knows?
Hope this helps some.
Good Luck

Thanks, all. I just got the oddest thing from my boss. It belonged to his aunt (he's 65). I'll have to post a thread on it, because I am really baffled.

Hi - got an email from my daughter who makes jewelry and also does belly dancing classes. here is what she says,

"I would try listing it under belly dance -i've gotten some similar stuff but not as nice from looking at the belly dance category.

The necklace is really nice. the stones aren't worth much though - carnelian and citrine"

hope this helps
