I just received an email from PayPal stating I am the recipient of potentially fraudulent funds and have placed a pending reversal of $100 on my account for a transaction from May of 2003!

To qualify for the PP Seller's Protection Policy I need to respond with details of this transaction including item, emails, tracking number, etc.

Fortunately, I have kept the transaction records for this one, but just how LONG are we supposed to keep them? ebay dumps completed auctions within months, but PayPal can come looking for a reversal YEARS later?

Geez, I've always been on the PayPal bandwagon, but this scares me!

Send the email to [email protected] before you reply to it or do anything else.

It appears to be valid from PayPal and not a spoof as my account shows the pending reversal and the transaction details are correct.

Yes, I was able to still track this item on UPS. USPS - who knows?

I found the answer to how long the USPS keep tracking info. I use Delivery Confirmation for most of my First Class and Priority Mail.

Sounds like that is only good for 6 months.
Swell.

From www.usps.com:

How long is delivery and/or tracking information available on the Internet?

We apologize we can not confirm delivery of an item without the confirmation number. Unfortunately, we only keep records for the amount of time specified below before it is purged out of our system. Online access to information for the following amounts of time:

Express Mail® - 24 months (Delivery information is stored off-line once it is more than six months old. Such searches can be conducted at 1-800-222-1811)
Signature Confirmation® - 1 year (Delivery informatin is stored off-line once it is more than six months old.)

Delivery Confirmation™, Certified Mail™ and Registered Mail™ - 6 months
Certified Mail and Registered Mail information is also available for months 7-24 by purchasing a Return Receipt After Mailing.

Update: PayPal has cancelled its pending reversal on my transaction from May 2003 and restored the funds in my account because I could prove I sent the item to the Confirmed address.

I asked PayPal how long users are required to keep transaction records. "Unfortunately, there is no timeframe for when a transaction can or
cannot be reversed."

I inquired with UPS about the length of time they keep tracking info. "Our UPS Online Tracking System only maintains
information on tracking numbers for up to 12 months after the delivery date. Our Package Information Department is able to
obtain information for an additional 6 months when the shipper issues a tracer. After 18 months, however, all tracking information is purged from our system."

Wow,
That fact that PayPal was even trying to reverse a transaction that was over 12 months old is even a bigger reason not to accept PayPal.
