while posting f/back, i noticed my customer had received f/back from another auction, and in the link section with auction number, it is marked "private."

They use this when they don't want anyone to know what they are buying. I'm sure there are a lot of reasons why but one group that uses it a lot is the cross dressers. Probably people who buy adult items also.

deb: wouldnt that be the reason bidder list be kept private, rather than the number...
--------
secondary question?? how do you set the listing with a private number...i, out of curiosity checked and find no venue to list this way..

By default, every auction is listed as an open auction. The seller has the option to make it a private auction when he lists it. This is done to prevent bidder's names from showing up in the bidders list or anywhere else, usualy to keep bottomfeeders from contacting active bidders during or after the auction. It's also used to entice members to bid when they want to keep their username from being shown, such as in adult area auctions. It's on the list of options on the Vendio listing page.

I'm having a hard time wording this for some reason. If you are looking at someone's feedback and see someone you know, then click on the auction number, you may find out something the buyer didn't want you to know.
I'm don't know where you set it up at. I have been using Vendio for years and don't think I have ever seen anything about a private auction here.

okay...you right, i am having trouble explaining this one..so please look at what i am looking at...
---------------
seller is bed-dr...her feedback has many auctions that show in the column where listing number is usually, but show "private."
---------------
you will note that these are not private auctions in the usual sense..i know i run them...a private auction keeps the bidders' identity a secret...
---------------
every one of bed-dr's auctions can cross reference back to the buyer...
--------
i think you know my next question??? after the auction, it appears that the bidders identify is given and them auction number is then secreted?
sorry but this makes no sense to me

I went to a seller I know who sells lingerie and looked at her feedback. I found one where there was no auction number. I then clicked on the buyers feedback number and looked at his (Mike) feedback. On the feedback from this seller there was no item number, just the word private. So, I can't see what Mike bought. She says she runs private auctions to protect her customers.
I think the auctions you are running aren't private auctions, but ones that are for one buyer, no one else can bid on it. Maybe? I forget what you call them. On private auctions anyone can bid on them, but no one can see who.

I read your last post again. I think I understand what you are saying now. Only the first paragraph of my last post applies.

I recently bought a Disney Tinkerbell Snowglobe for my daughter and was irked when the FB the seller left me was "Private"...I guess it is supposed to protect buyers from competitors seeing what they are bidding on, but I sure didn't appreciate the idea that someone reviewing my FB would think I was a CROSS DRESSER or something of that ilk!

I can understand that. It works the other way too. If someone with a user name Mike buys from someone with a user name that makes it very clear what she sells and the auction is private...well you have a good idea what Mike bought. Especially if the seller also has auctions that are not private.

I couldn't find that userID in your feedback profile.
But, usually, when you see "private" in lieu of an auction number and a live link in someone's feedback, it means it's something from the "mature audiences" section. eBay substitutes the word "private" for the usual live link so people from the general eBay population, including kids, can't access that auction. At the same time, you can click on the seller's userID and see what the seller sells, so it's not really completely hidden. But it does protect someone's privacy to some extent because you can't see the actual auction they won.

you see private auction, private feedback in antiques category as many bidders are dealers looking to resell the items.
some sellers eventually will have private feedback as they sell new repros as antiques and dont want any one to read their feedback.
