I am not real computer literate. I can run the computer and do what is necessary but when something like this happens I have to rely on people online to help me out.

I left home for a while, computer on, email running. I came home to an error message on my email program - Outlook, that says:

Unable to display the folder. The file C:\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Personal Folders(1).pst could not be accessed. Access is denied.

What does that mean and how do I fix it?

Did you restart your computer? Sometimes that helps.

Hi Helga - here are a couple of places that might help. You will probably have to use what's called the "inbox repair tool" - there's a small program for it on the second link. Have someone a little more familiar with PCs read the first and second links I've provided here. One of two things most likely happened to cause this; you had a very large file that corrupted your mail, or somehow all your mail files (.pst) became "read only." These can be fixed if you follow the directions below. Good luck!

Helga: When you turned off your computer, did you turn off the power source to it, too? Sometimes that sort of magic works, and who knows how?!

Hi

Wow I'm so frustrated.

The files are corrupted as difs said.

I called my server and they did what they could do within their limits to help. We tried to inbox repair tool but it wouldn't allow it access either, telling me to use Scan Disk. The server said my system apparently needed "cleaned up" *duh* which I can't do right now. I mean when I restart it it takes a good 15 minutes for it to boot up. I'm sure it does need cleaned up but I can't afford that right now.

So I downloaded an email program at their suggestion to use for now called Incredimail. IT seems okay I guess. I lost all of my other emails though - addresses, PayPal payments fromthis weekend (not alot but there were 5 payment notifications in there!), everything.

Sucks.

Chalk it up to how things go for me.

I didn't have any new emails from the time I left my compuer to the time I came back so I don't know how that happened.

I wonder if a system restore would help? I'm definitely not an expert but one time the cable company tech walked me through it.

Please, someone come in and verify my instructions.

Here they are: Go to Start, All Programs, System Tools, System Restore. Pick a date a few days back.

Helga..you don't need the PayPal notifications for anything. Just sign in to your PayPal account and they are all listed there under "details" in "overview" of my account.

Helga,
It won't get any better until it's cleaned up, only worse. Delete the temporary internet files and history through Internet Explorer and disk cleanup will go much faster. It actually doesn't take that long. Defrag is what can take a while, but the speed you will gain more than makes up for a couple hours downtime. If it is taking 15 minutes to boot up, cleaning the garbage off the hard drive should be your #1 priority. Run your virus scan immediately after you run disc cleanup.

I think Incredimail, with all that animation etc., will just slow you down more. If you need a temporary email address, get a free one from Yahoo or Hotmail.
You can clean up your computer yourself by going to Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup. It will empty your recycle bin, delete your temporary internet files and cookies. You'll need to delete your Windows cookies separately. When you go to bed tonight, start your disk defragmenter after turning off all programs and your screen saver. Restart in the morning and you should see a big difference.

Well the disk cleanup thing seems to have helped somewhat.

I will run the defrag when I go to bed tonight.

I dont know how to shut off my screen saver.

I'm very very computer stupid.

I've probably got a ton of crap on this computer that I'll never even use and don't know how to get rid of it.

Helga,
In your original post, you said your email client was Outlook.
If it is indeed Outlook and not Outlook Express, I would assume you installed it from a MS Office disk.
To fix it, put the original Office disk in your CDROM. Once it opens, it will ask you what you want to do.
The 3 options are:
1)Repair Office
2)Add or Remove features
3)Remove Office

Choose the repair option and follow the instructions. You won't lose any of your emails UNLESS one is already corrupt.

After it has fixed itself, do your windows update. Then while you are still on the windows update page, you will see a link to Office update. Go there and do your Office updates.

Hope you're on DSL or cable.

Hope this helps.

well Helga there's no hope for you. Throw your computer away and get XP so you can do system restore.

Download this: http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10227353.html and run it.

Hit Scan and then save log. It will open up a notepad document. When it opens up, choose EDIT then SELECT ALL - COPY.

Come back over here and post your log and I will wade through it. I think you have something running on your computer that you don't need. It's a start anyway.

Do NOT check anything to be fixed!!!!!

I don't have a disk for Outlook, it was installed onto my computer when it was redone in 1999. My original computer stuff was Acer and I dont have that anymore since the reinstall.

Glassgrl I'm not sure what you meant by throw your computer away, there is no hope.

sweetie, I was joking....sort of. I'm assuming since you had windows 95 and reloaded your computer with W98 that you're running a very old computer. It might be time to think about seriously updating since you're not computer technical. Windows XP is far superior to W98.

Is your email not saved to your server? You didn't have to download incredimail to read email, you could sign on Mail2web.com and read your email.

You might want to try running THIS before anything else....

Be sure and check AUTOSCAN and EMAILS.

I know I need a new system, I've known that for a long time. I bought my computer in 1997. I just don't have the money to buy a new one, even the ones that are only $400. Maybe if things pick up on eBay around Christmas I could set that as a goal for myself, I don't know.

I appreciate everyone's help. But I think the only thing that is going to help at this point is to get a new computer and that's not something anyone else can help me with.

{{throwing up hands}}

right. guess we won't be seeing you on Fear Factor anytime soon.

So your computer is corrupt somewhere and you won't bother to try and fix it? So you'll just keep on selling on Ebay and sending out possibly corrupted emails to winners and others?

AT LEAST RUN BIT DEFENDER please!

I'll bet my bottle of 2 buck chuck that you don't have up to date virus software. Do you?

Glassgrl - thanks for the tip on Bitdefender! I'm running it now. I have 3 different virus programs (Norton, TrendMicro and a Trojan utility) but it's always good to check with different programs because they each pick up different things occasionally.

I would have to agree with your recommendation to Helga. When you're an online seller, your computer is your place of business. If you always to go in a state of disrepair, ultimately it will continue to degrade and you could seriously compromise your customer relationships, etc. Helga, go to Best Buy or an electronics store nearby, get an inexpensive NEW computer with one of those "no interest until 2006" deals and pay it off a little at a time. You can't operate on such an old machine. It's hazardous to your business!

A lot of folks have taken the time to help you on this issue, so no one is being critical...we ALL have computer glitches! But a unit as old, unmaintained, and behind on technology as yours is very challenging to
repair.

I tried to run it and this is what it says:

The BitDefender ScanOnLine Service currently supports only the ActiveX enabled browsers.

This makes it unavailable for the Netscape family browsers.

I run Mozilla Foxfire Browser.

It's not like I don't realize that I need to buy a better computer I KNOW that but I can't just go out and do it. I can't get a credit card or anything at Best Buy. I have to deal with what I have because I dont have any other options at the moment. I have no credit cards, no way to get credit cards so I can't just charge a new computer.

It's not like I dont want to fix what is wrong, I'm just afraid of screwing it up even more and then having to pay someone to fix my computer only to tell me exactly what you guys are telling me. That it's old and needs replaced.

Helga: I just want you to know that I've been sympathizing strongly with your plight here! Many of us plunged into computer use not understanding what makes them tick, what to call the various "things" that happen on them--no nomenclature in our bag of tricks.

I wish I'd taken a good computer course first, but the job I was in didn't require it or need it. Folks like us sort of slide into using more and more features, still not understanding enough even to describe our problems!

My husband knows a lot more than I do, thank God, and he's here whenever I don't understand something; I just have to holler for him, LOL. And even then, with him standing right here, I lack the proper words to describe the problem, frequently. I've told him many times that, if he were to die suddenly, I'd have to find a computer whiz and put him or her on a monthly retainer so I could call and get help.

A close friend of mine, older and divorced, said she just stops what she's doing and calls one of her children, long distance, who can usually walk her through her problem.

If you have no one close at hand to help you, you may well need to take the suggestions of some of the folks here and try their ideas. I know it's scary--but the alternative is to keep doing what you're doing and suffer a lot of anxiety hourly or daily. Bless you.

I don't mean to be disrespectful either...but that wringing of the hands and I can't do it doesn't work for me. I didn't know anything about computers a few years ago either...but you can learn!

I have up to date Norton. And AVG free and Spybot and AdAware. I run HouseCall frequently. BUT I just ran bitdefender and there were 3!! virus emails stuck in my computer archives!

What happens is I use Outlook not Express and Express stores these emails.

So I'm able to find them and I will get rid of them.

There is a page on Microsoft that will tell her/him/it how to fix your .pst files but I'm sure it will be another "oh well" if I passed it on.

It just scares the heck out of me that people want the technology but then are unwilling to go the mile to use it wisely.

I already tried to fix the problem through the microsoft help page about the pst error. There is another problem in the program that is supposed to fix that - the inbox repair kit. It was suggested by my server people that I take the computer to someone to have it fixed.

I tried to run that bitdefender but for some reason it wont' run on my computer.

You are making me feel like I'm doing something wrong because I'm computer stupid. I've always been this way and I've tried to learn to fix things and I still have a hard time.

jwwrs is right.

What you are describing sounds like you must have had a virus and the any virus removed that file from your system. You will have to do all of your anti virus updates then see if you can go back in and repair them. If not, then you will need to reload the program.
