Does the ring come apart?
I have puzzle rings I purchased in Saudi in the gold souks, these are italian made and have five components that interlock.
If not, hard for me to add more...except my experience with nipple rings, not personal mind you, but with a boyfriend who was pierced, is that they twist sideways, are thicker, and generally aren't entwined, at least the jewelrymakers we visited presented nothing like this, of course this was in the early nineties, who knows now, it's all rather pervasive in mainstream culture (read, it's going out of style).

Puzzle rings are rarely three rings. They are most commonly 4 but can be up to 12.
Is the ring made up of three solid bands in different tones/metals? If so it is a trinity ring.
If the bands are bent or twisted and look like they woul form a solid flat piece of combined correctly, then it is probably a puzzle ring. You can find the solutions to putting it together on the internet but I have not found any for a three band ring.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I have always heard them called Roll Rings.
I have one made by USA Gold of yellow, white and rose gold thin bands intertwined.

Chimp - those are the trinity rings. They are knock-offs of the Cartier design. Gorgeous rings that I bet you got much more reasonably priced than if they had come from Cartier

The industry calls them rolling rings.
Puzzle rings are a different animal altogether.
If you ever have to give a present to someone you really want to annoy, give them a puzzle ring.

There are 3 separate rings and are in sterling silver. Paid $5 for it. Rolling rings sounds like it. I have another with 3 shades of gold that I also paid $5 for about 3 years ago at a yard sale. It was in a box of jewelry but everybody was grabbing at and it is all I was able to get. Not Cartier tho but gold. Hey, thanks for all your help and as usual you came thru.

I am surprised no one mention celtic jewelry, they have interlocking circles which implies life is a chain of interlocking events .

No one mentioned it because the piece is obviously not a Celtic design.

Also known as Russian Wedding Rings. They come in 3 band and 5 band.

Teach - I agree. I hunt for real Celtic pieces and find that a lot of sellers call it Celtic if it has a couple of squiggles. Especially Bali jewelry. Sigh.

Mislabelling Bali as Celtic...that's one I hadn't run across yet, but there's not much that surprises me any more.
It's going to get worse. Nicole Miller's new line incorporates a lot of Celtic motifs.
