I'm going to my mother's tomorrow to pickup the baseball cards she's been collecting since the 1970's. There is a cedar blanket chest FULL of these cards. There has to be 100's of them. Does anyone know of a good site to research these? I know it will be impossible to research all of them as it would take weeks to do it. Any suggestions on selling them? In lots, maybe? I'm not looking forward to this, but my mother doesn't need the cards and like I told her, why save them for the boys. Sell them and have fun with the money!!!

Thanks, stone. I'm signed up over there, but I've never listed. Maybe I'll divide them up and sell some both places. I'm really not looking forward to this at all especially since the only money I'm taking is for the fees involved. All I want in return is a good old fashioned mom-cooked meal!

Thanks, twelve. For my mother - anything. With the onset of Alzheimer's, I think she should sell what she can and have fun with the profits. An inheritance, while nice, is really meaningless if the one who left it to you didn't get to do what he or she wanted to. Besides, it one less thing for my brothers to fight over. LOL!

Children or adults? Hmmm, let me think on that. LOL! They are adults in body. My son knows quite a lot having collected cards himself. I'm going to enlist his help. I'll pay him by allowing him to miss one "cleaning the house" weekend. That ought to make him very happy! Getting him to clean the bathroom is hard work for me so it will make me happy as well.

Good luck! I sold a ton of baseball cards for a friend of mine...her son collected them and she brought 5 black trash bags full! My advice...Baseball card collectors are a picky, picky bunch. Unless they've been graded and "encased", you're not likely to get a whole bunch...unless, of course, one of them is a Honus Wagner! I ended up sorting them by maker (mainly) and filling up shoe boxes with a "lot". They did reasonably well and the collectors were pleased as, it seems, each shoe box had a minor "gem" or two. The buyers were pleased as they got their money's worth and I was delighted (as was my friend) to get them out of the house! You won't get rich but there was no way I had the time or inclination to research literally thousands of cards.

i got out of the baseball card business years ago for a few reasons. Between 1954 and the mid 80's there was only one company making mass produced baseball cards, that was the Topps company. In the early 80's Donruss and Fleer jumped in and started producing a line of cards each year. In 1989 Upper Deck came about and created the hysteria of "modern rare" collectibles. Within a few years every company was producing 3, 4, 5, up to 10 sets for each sport and each year. it ruined the card business because just as one set was popular, another set would come out and be popular for a few weeks. During the early 90's I used to promote baseball card shows in Florida. In 1996, I completely quit because of the oversaturation. Within a few years, the biggest things was professional grading of the cards. Collectors could send cards to an appraiser who would charge them to grade the cards based on several factors including centering, corner sharpness, focus of the photo, etc. It really got out of hand and everyone flocked to buying cards deemed "pristine" or "gem mint" or whatever catch phrase they could come up with. Ironically, it was simply another way for a business to make a quick buck on the collectors.
Most cards that are truly collectible are from the 60's back, but there is gaining popularity for the 70's and 80's, but condition is the most important thing when evaluating value. Collectors want cards that are in perfect or near perfect condition and if it isn't mint, expect the value to decrease significantly.

Hey gumby, remember when Leaf came out in 1990 or 1991?
I made a killing off of just two boxes, I don't think they are worth much now...
You are right oversaturation is the key... and it made most sets worthless...

good call twelve. i completely forgot about leaf. i remember everyone hunting for Frank Thomas rookie cards. Wow, what a blast from the past.
it saddens me that what was a fun hobby for kids, and later became something fun to collect and even invest in became the monster that it is. the only people making money on baseball cards are the manufacturers and companies who do the grading. Oh, what really ticked me off, and swore me off ever, ever, ever collecting baseball cards again was Dr. Beckett. Back in the mid-80's he came up with the Baseball Price Guide. It was a large book, published yearly. As the collecting and values grew, his company began issuing a monthly baseball price guide magazine. Then, when the manufacturers began printing tons of sets each year, Beckett stuck his hands a little too far into the cookie jar and began grading cards for collectors and dealers. I'm not too fond of the ethics involved in the notion of pricing cards (generally they were always over inflated, except for the hottest 10 cards on the market at any given time), and then being the same company who told you what your card's condition was in. It seems a bit too much, and could only serve their own interests.

It's worse than I though. Oh, God, help me. There aren't hundreds, there are thousands. The long white boxes in the first photo are full. They are full sets in numerical order. There are 9 of them! Mint condition. The cards are from 1981 - 1996 or so. Most are still in the boxes as they were delivered to the store. Never opened. Never touched. My daughter looked at some that were open and there are quite a few super cards so far. This task will take me forever. I'm going to sell them by the box because there is no other way. 99.9% of the cards are mint condition.

I managed to count the cards in one of the bins and it's almost 13,500 cards. I think I will stop for the night. I don't want to look at them any more! LOL!

Thanks, twelve, for the advice. The book I have is from 1994 so I'm going to invest in another one tomorrow. I already told my mother it will take along time to go through the loose cards! 9 full sets. Brother. There are also many, many from the 1970s.
Thanks again to everyone. This will be a real experience.

The man I work with is a well know authority on baseball cards. I can put you in touch with him if you like. He has been selling them since the 70's. Email me @ [email protected].

Don't buy a book!!!! Get the Beckett magazine. It is cheaper and somewhat more accurate.
As for the packs, don't open them. If a set is sealed, don't open it. Why??? Most people assume they are in mint condition and will pay more to have packs than get an indivdual card. Some packs can be sold for $10, 20, even 100 bucks. Keep in mind, that what you may see as Mint may only be excellent to a card collector. There are so many levels of grading, and trust me... They are extremely picky. If you get a chance, let us know what sets are there including the year, brand, and sport.

What do you think of this one? 1979 Fleer. Another weird card:

I haven't even gone through the hockey, basketball and football cards yet. The football cards are from the 1970's. I'll keep those. They were collected by my brother who passed. I can't part with them.

Give it a rest, will you? My tag is political as well only more subtely so. I, for one, like tomwiii's tags. I don't think the rules pertain to our tags.
Now, if you can't help me with these dang cards. . . .
I don't think I'll ever be able to watch baseball again, LOL. My hands hurt, my eyes hurt and we won't discuss my back. Looks like I'm getting a massage at work today!
It's 5:00 a.m. and I'm wide awake. This is insane!

Well, I got through one set of 89 Fleers. It's only missing 5 cards and since I have a full box of unopened wax packs. . . I took your advice and noted Ken Griffey, Jr., Bill Ripkin, Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield (there are three or four each of these which I will sell separately). The All Star Cards are also there missing two of them and the complete set of stickers. It has taken me since 5:30am to get this far with one year of Fleers. But, I did it!!!!
I'm sure I'll be at this into the New Year! LOL! Again, thanks everyone for your advice!

Cheryl:
It seems most of what you have are baseball cards but you mentioned a few posts ago about hockey cards. If you've got hockey cards from the 70's, 80's etc. please let me know, I'd be happy to make you an offer. Or if you would rather sell them on the open market, let us know when you list them. My wife and I are big hockey card collectors and are always looking to add to the collection.
