If you would like to get into Paypal and log-in, simply type into your web browser https://www.paypal.com
.
If you simply type in www.paypal.com, this will not work, as it brings you(most of the time) to the unsecure http://www.paypal.com. No https, as in not secure, as in maybe not Paypal, as in perhaps the new front page has been hacked and people are being misdirected to an unsecure site. .
.
.I think that the conclusion to be drawn is that Paypal has been compromised. Those that typed in www.paypal.com, and signed in, since last Friday, have possibly compromised the security of their account.
.
.At the moment I would advise to not sign in to Paypal at any place. It's probably safe at the https page, but I think it prudent to wait until the dust settles on this one before giving out your password. Good luck to all....and I hope that I'm wrong.

i tried to get in and they wouldn't accept my password so I clicked on "forgot my password" and I had to apply for a new one and gave them my banking information. I tried to get in with the new password and still can't get in

You don't have to type https. If you type www.paypal.com, it takes you to the https.

Thanks, Longtime! Until your hint about the https, I couldn't get through at all. Now I've gotten in and have transferred a chunk of money to my bank account. Better safe than sorry.

I appreciate your tip.

NIEL....I hope you're not serious...that would be a mistake.
.
.Cheryl.....I have tried several times over the last few days. If you type in https://www.paypal.com you get through to the front page immediately 100% of the time. If you type in www.paypal.com, then SOMETIMES you automatically go the https site, as you should. Most of the time you go nowhere. And sometimes(not since yesterday), you were being misdirected to the http(non-secure) page.

I still would give my strong opinion that you're better off not signing in anywhere, until the dust settles.

niel: You had better watch your bank account if you gave "whoever" your banking information. This thing is looking awfully suspicious.

And with eBay's "minor glitch, and a few were affected" press statement, you can bet they wouldn't tell us if they had been hacked.

From "Google" News a few minutes ago:

"Once PayPal goes back online, users may not find that everything is perfect with the service and its handling of discrepancies during this down period. Auction Bytes reports:

Even when PayPal goes back online, it is likely buyers and sellers will have a tough time reconciling their records and verifying whether payments have been made.

Users have turned to the courts in the past over eBay and PayPal problems. In July, eBay users sued eBay over billing glitches, which are still not resolved according to users.

Users filed a class-action lawsuit against PayPal in 2002 over poor customer service issues and the closing of accounts without notice. The parties reached a settlement this July, requiring PayPal to pay out $9.25 million into a settlement fund that must also pay for administrative costs and plaintiffs’ lawyer fees.

The only service on par with PayPal was c2it, but CitiGroup closed the service a year ago. CheckFree and BidPay are alternative payment methods also popular with eBay users, but have nowhere near the market share of PayPal."

Bill,
You are absolutely correct. There is no way in the world they would ever admit to being hacked. That is standard proceedure for any online entity, especially those that have customer credit card and banking information stored on their servers. Ebay has only admitted to being hacked one time, and that was when some script kiddie defaced the front page and enough media people saw it so they couldn't deny it. The fact is, Ebay has been hacked several times. They are second only to AOL as the favorite target of hackers. Given the fact that Paypal is possibly one of the largest databases of credit card numbers in the country, I would suspect they may be close to the top of the hacker's preferred list by now. Many of you who have been on Ebay for a few years remember the 21 hour outage Ebay had. They learned a painful lesson on that one, and spent millions to insure that something like that never happens again because of internal human error. You can bet that they day they took title to the Paypal name, the same measures were implemented at that site. That's the reason I can't believe the present problems were caused by bad code their IT people installed. We'll probably never hear the full story, but I still smell a fox in the henhouse.

I think that I would contact my bank, explain the situation, and see what they suggest.

Niel: Yes, check with your bank ASAP. In the very least, CALL PayPal - here is a number someone used with success: 1-888-221-1161 (I got from the ebay PayPal board).

I went to SYRACUSE STAGE on SUN to see "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf" with my kid & his wife -- anyhoo: was out of cash, so I walked across the street to a PIZZA joint to use their ATM with my PP DEBIT CARD...

Not a freestanding one, they run the card & you input yer PIN...I asked the charge, & the girl said $2.00, which I thought was outrageous, but I needed cash.

Turns out that the charge was actually $10 -- I'm pooping Twinkies!

Has anybody ever heard of such an outrageous fee?? I sure hadn't!
