I seldom ship overseas, however, I need to ship a 5 lb Christmas gift to a family member in Helsinki,Finland and wondered about tracking options available through the USPS.
The last time my wife sent some items to a family member using global Priority Mail, the package was lost for about 3 months but it finally showed up there.
Our Postal clerk told her that "there's no way to track an overseas shipment".
We're hoping to avoid that kind of screw up and worry this time (it's a $250 present!).
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks!

The only way to ship would be thru an expedited service. I would recommend DHL for that type of thing over USPS any day of the week.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

USPS Express mail has tracking to most countries. It will cost $38 though.
Regular airmail is $22 but I wouldn't bet on it getting there this year still. (probably would but I've had a few take well over a month)
I would bet that DHL would cost at least double. (USPS EMS guaranteed is just DHL and would be $75)

look into USPS registered mail or certified mail,it may be a cheap way to track your package.
