to ship an artificial Christmas tree? It's a 7 ft tree but it breaks down into 3 sections, so the box would be about 4 ft. I checked the price on the UPS website and the only options I could get were Overnight and 2nd Day Air. $300 to $500.
I also checked on eBay and some lady had a 6 ft tree she would ship for $12 for Parcel Post. I thought it would be cheaper to use UPS or FedEx.

Have you checked by bus? Also FedEx Ground. There is something wrong with the charges that UPS is quoting, unless you are shipping to a foreign country.

I haven't checked either one of those yet. I put in a zip code in CA to get some idea on shipping it a long way.

I used GreyHound shipping once. It was really simple. You drop the item at the bus station and the buyer picks it up at the local bus station.
I shipped a hard top for a convertable car (an MG midget) for about $70.

You didn't check the UPS site correctly. You forgot to change the date that the shipment will be sent. When you check on the weekend, it defaults to pickup on Saturday or Sunday which ever day you are on. That is why you only had 2nd day or overnight options. You need to change the day to a weekday to properly get the correct shipping amount.
Also, 4 feet seems too small. That is only 48 inches. There is no way a seven foot xmas tree will break down and fit into a 48 inch box. I know, that is the size of my tree. When you measured your box, you did also measure around the box, didn't you?
Here is an example.
If your box is about the same size as the one I use to pack my tree, and my tree just barely fits, your box should be in the neighborhood of 108 inches..
A 48 inch box is the same size as the large priority square box. And I am pretty sure a 7 foot xmas tree is not going to fit.
UPS or Fedex still will be your best options, but you better make sure of your size first.

Thanks Stone
I didn't know about changing the date. I was guesstimating on the box. I realized later that I would have to fit two sections like shoes in a box which would make it longer.
I was concerned because there is such a big difference between $12 and $300.
