Hi All,
About 10 days or so I asked for help with my computer shutting down repeatedly on a daily basis. A few of you suggested installing Hijackthis, which I did and the remedy seem to work until this morning where it shut down again for the first time since installing Hijackthis. Yesterday while working on the computer, I noticed that the little scottie dog symbol (I think that this belonged to Hijack) was not visible on my lower tool bar. The next day my computer problem is back. I am getting frustrated to say the least. Someone suggested that I go out and buy a new computer. Sure with what money? I have to resolve this problem before my system crashes so I can work.
If anyone has any sound advice, I would greatly appreciate it. I really feel like throwing it out in the rain at the moment.

So, if the little Scottie Dog is gone, you have to get him back. That is, Hijack This or WinPatrol or whatever you are using has been inadvertently turned off. If you can't figure out how to turn it on, download and install it again.

It is back but he didn't come back until my computer shut down on its own. I am going to have to bug my son to help me get this problem squared away.
thank you,

Hi Tom & Ralphie,
I am PC-CHALLENGED to the max. I will have to bug my 24 year old son who has been on the computer since he was 2 for his help. Unfortunately, mom didn't pay attention while he & his father were playing or I should say learning. I will ask him to take a look at my computer and your advice so I can get a handle on this problem. I couldn't even begin to tell you what type of system I have except that he upgraded to the XP whatever. I am totally PC-CHALLENGED but I can make a mean cheesecake, my specialty being Oreo cookie cheesecake. Melts in your mouth. Yum!!
thank you for your advice. I show my son when he pops in tonight.
take care,
Rosanne

Rosanne, don't feel too over-whelmed by being PC-challenged. I was all agog about computers when I was growing up. I learned how to program on one of the first computers the size of a large cash register, with punch cards. Went into electronics and data systems in the Navy. Learned COBOL in college.
Now, when I peruse TechRepublic http://techrepublic.com.com/ some of the discussions are literally greek to me. I have to look up half of the vocabulary to read some of the articles and then, at times, the point of the posts are so mundane I don't grasp the point.
So, it is a continuous learning process. If you jump in and start learning you will soon be more conversant and up to speed than many people immersed in IT for decades! It's similar to the medical field; you never forget the basics, but go on a year-long sabbatical and you have to be brought up to speed upon your return.
