Sure... it could be from the fact that I went to sleep at 6am and got up at 7 but I really think it's this damn sweater.

Just recieved the mail (including four with delivery confirmation that the new mailman scanned and everything and would have screwed three people had it not been for the fact that I noticed that three of the four are to someone with the same street number but four streets down). The one package actually for me was a gorgeous sweater I bought from ebay. New and exactly as described except for the overwhelming eye watering stench of old lady perfume (and this is definately not a old lady sweater). Why why why would someone decide to scent a new sweater, or any sweater for that matter? I don't usually react to perfumes but damn this is hideous....

Gotta run... must wash sweater before I go blind.

I'd like to see him do that in Philly next Sunday. Their fans aren't as civilized as the Packer fans.

Doesn't matter. Beating the packers in the playoffs is the same a winning the Super Bowl. Nothing else matters.

McJ - I smoke - smoke does not bother me in the least. That perfume was hideous. I had to take the box out to the dumpster because I could still smell the perfume when it was in a covered trash can across the room. I've never had that experience before.... that sweater smelled stronger than my make-up case did when a bottle of perfume bit it in it in flight. ACK!!!

fenix,

I have had the same problem with fabric, pillow shams and clothing bought on Ebay. The only way to REALLY get the stinky perfumy smell out is to wash it like you normally would with detergent, but put about 6 scoops of Oxyclean powder in the washing machine with it. Since you would be washing it in fairly cool water (most likely), dissolve the Oxclean first in a little hot water and add to the washer.

I have used this successfully on items I first thought I'd have to toss out with the box it came in. Some eBay sellers store their merchandise with smelly dryer sheets, even including them in the box when they ship it. They have no idea how offensive it is when it arrives at the other end.

I am allergic to most commercially produced scents. I try to run a frangrance-free home. It's not easy. Most people would be amazed if they took a moment to list the number of scented items they use daily in their home. Soap, hairspray, deodorant, shampoo, dishwashing and dishwasher detergent, hand soap, laundry detrgents and additives, glass cleaners, and the list goes on. Most homes are inundated with multiple fragrances.

Most people don't know that some commercial fragrances (especially cologne, air fresheners, etc.) have ingredients that cause deadening of the sense of smell, and you end up using more and more. If you have any friends or co-workers who are reeking of perfume from several feet away, they simply can't smell it like you can.

Ok, enough of my ranting!

Fenix.. I can sympathize with you, it was probably some old Avon perfume.. they always remind me of Old Lady's perfume...
but I have to tell you that, as a non smoker, in a smoke free home.. I can smell the cigarette smoke in a package before I open it up..
OMG... some items I have received smelled so strongly of cigarette smoke it made me sick.. I buy antique dolls etc.. and I have had to fabreeze their bodies, and sit them outside to air and even then the smell remains...and those who think by putting a fabric dryer sheet in with the item will help...NOT.. then it smells of bounce and cigarette smoke...yuck..oh and that reminds me...I own 3 dogs... and I can always tell if the seller has a cat or dog.. because my dogs pay special attention to the boxes and shipping material...LOL.. Smoke doesn't bother me one bit either, but when someone tries to cover it up with perfume, their cheapest stuff too, the mix can be pretty bad.

Just thought that might be it.

Hope the laundering freshens it up because you like the sweater. Did it?

McJ - The washing definitely did the trick. Well... the washing and my favorite fabric softener. I have this softener from Mexico that is vanilla scented. I love it. It's just pure vanilla scent, not too strong, nothing else mixed in. Total comfort scent! Goes perfect with a cozy warm sweater .

Where would one buy that kind of fabric softener? I hate the stuff at the store now because it smells too flowery.

Cheryl - the brand is Suavitel (it's a Colgate Palmolive product). I have seen it in the US in Target Supertores and dollar stores. I think they may be backing off that scent in the US because the only place I have been able to find it online is by the case at coopgrocer.com. They also make it in a dryer sheet.

Hi Fenix,
I am also interested in the Mexican vanilla scent. Would you be able to buy it at a Mexican grocery store? They just built this huge Mexican(Mexico sponsered) super market near Disneyland and I have wanted to visit. This would be an excellent reason. I love vanilla scent especially if you mix it with orange. It is heaven!!
thank you,
rosanne

I would definitely think you could find it at a latin grocer. BTW - Check out some of the Jarritos sodas while you are there. There is a great Lime one if you like citrus flavors.
