Hey there! When listing on the uk site do you leave the item location in the US or do you put something else? Also do you put in your description that the item is coming from the US(this is probably a no brainer)? In what currency will ebay charge the account? How do you know what time it is over there or does it matter? Thank you for your time. Also do you have them pay in US Dollars?

Item location is United Kingdom otherwise it will not show up in the default search (UK default search is "items in UK" otherwise they must click to search "items available to UK".

I don't put that the item is coming from the US only because I didn't think of it at first and it turned out to not really matter. When I ship I send a confirming email with an estimate of arrival time.

Ebay charges my account in US dollars based on the current conversion rate on the day of listing.

You can find out he time based on the time stamp at the bottom of their site. If it helps 3pm EST is 8pm Britsish Standard then just work backwards to match to your time zone and adjust to your favorite closing time. I have great three time zone watch that keeps me from losing it too. I keep it tuned to my zone, the UK and Bejing (contacting suppliers)

As for payments... I'm one of those people that is not paranoid about PayPal so I just let them pay via PayPal in "Pounds Sterling" as PayPal lists it. I convert funds to USD when I need them. I do have some customers that don't have PayPal and depending on their feedback and my general vibe from them I either allow them to send a check (or cheque as the brits spell it) or cash. I accept both in Pounds since it is easier for them so they are more likely to follow thru and pay and no problem for me since my bank accepts both for deposit.

No problem on the time. We are all here to help as we can. One big piece of advice I will give is to make sure you know the idiosyncracies of your market in the UK. Sometimes like spelling will kick you in the butt. i.e. - jewelry here is jewellery there. Clothing sizes are different, ring sizes are WAY different and everything is in mm or cm rather than inches.

Best of luck if you decide to venture in!

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Thank you for the advice. In looking at the auctions I saw the term VAT, what is that?

VAT is the UKs "Value Added Tax". Since your account will be classified as an american account even if you list your country as the United Kingdom when listing then you are VAT exempt on fees and your items are VAT exempt when listing. (They can still incur VAT when imported depending on how you decide to deal with your shipping.)

On how I deal with shipping? Do you mean shipping as a gift or merchandise.

How you mark the form for customs and how much value you place on it. UK still charges customs on gifts but there is a higher threshold. They also add the postage amount to the declared value when figuring customs charges.
