Can anyone tell me the significance of the "S" in the middle of this pair of aviator wings from WWII? Also, what is the significance of the star above the second pair of wings? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for info. The owner was a Lt.Col. and flew the "Hump" during the war so don't think the Flight Surgeon (as you said) is correct. His wife said she THOUGHT he was a Flight Instructor somewhere along the line..could that be it?

SUPER Flyboy ........God bless those WW11 Army Air Corps Guys. They are passing away by the dozens per day....They should say sterling silver on the back side. Such a shame the Families have NO idea what these represent and just yard sale them. The one who was pinned with these Wings had GUTS,Nerves of steel,,Integrity, Pride and HONOR! Salute!

AMEN Jack!!!
Blueyes-----I found some sterling wings in a consignment store but they were just plain without the star or S and they sold for around $30 so yours may do better.
I took all my dad's uniform buttons, pins, wild cat badges, color bars, dog tags, wire frame glasses, tiny photo copy (military issue) of honorable discharge paper and photo of him in his Army uniform and had them put in a shadow box frame. It looks wonderful. I could never sell these things because I am so proud of all the WWII men and women for the sacrifice they made for our freedom. However, my brother or I don't have kids and I doubt either of my step-daughters will care anything about it. Oh well, I won't know anything about it so it doesn't matter I guess. If they sell it at least the buyer will appreciate it I guess.

Thanks for the help and info everyone! These items (and I've got lots of other stuff) belonged to the late husband of a friend...None of her children are interested in the items. I've sold other WWII items on eBay and have always been gratified (as have the previous owners) that the buyers seem to be folks who are really interested in preserving the memories and honor of the WWII Vets. I had one buyer who wanted to use the items in his History class and wanted to be sure his students were aware of the sacrifice and duty these men gave for their country. One thing I do have that I haven't found on eBay is a booklet "China Airways Guide" which appears to be a classified listing of all the airways/routes/airports in China. It was printed in 1945 and "declassified" in 1946. It's really quite interesting and, we're hoping, pretty valuable. Again...appreciate all the help and info.
