I purchased items on a regular basis from a seller on ebay. They had been on the site since early 1998. They had a 5 letter user id that was a common word and very easy to remember.

About a year or so ago, they stopped selling on ebay. I think they eventually asked for their account to be completely closed, because where they had left me feedback, the feedback remained, but not the user-id.

Anyway, tonight I typed in the name to see if anyone else had the user-id. Someone did. I check the id history and it lists them as having the id since 1999. Which is impossible since the other seller had it from 1998-2003. They are also in another country from the seller that had the id originally.

I went back through an old email to make sure, I had not lost my mind and was mistaken about the id. I wasn't.

I found that really strange. It means that user id info is not accurate.

Has anyone else seen this?

Somebody hijacked it? Or bought it? A no-no, but who knows?

It seems to me that once an id is no longer registered it can be used by someone else?

Didn't someone once post on this board about
inadvertantly choosing a new eBay® userid that had once belonged to a less than
trustworthy seller?

Or I could be totally confused. (Would certainly not be the first time.)

I once had an account with a really great user name ("UserID1" and high feedback. I wanted to change the name of the user ID, but I didn't want to give up control of the cool name.

I had a second account with low feedback, but a stupid name ("UserID2".

I changed the name of the high feedback account to the new name ("UserID3" I wanted to use. It takes 30 days to permanently change your name, so for that 30 days, both names were unavailable.

But on the 30th Day, I was able to rename the stupid name account to the now-available cool name, The trick is you have to time it close so no one else grabs the name.

Thus, the old cool name is still mine, but is attached to a completely different account.

Both accounts were in existence for years, so that may explain what happened. Account name switching is probably pretty common.

I just love juggling multiple accounts. I'm on my 5th account now, not counting the one I used to use for Half.com, all good names, all good feedback. Too bad you can't merge more than two IDs together

I think they got it legitamately when the seller permanently closed their account.

What I found strange is that the new user is listed as having the id since 1999. The old user had that id until 2003.

The original person that had the ID changed it to another ID.

Then a 2nd person changed their ID to that ID. The 2nd person has been a member since 1999.

IF you go thru the feedbacks of both lots, wouldn,t you find your old ones there.? worth a look.

I don't think I am making myself clear.

If you go to the new users id and click on the link that says "id history". It shows no other ids for this person. Just the current id and a member since date of 1999.

There should at least be their previous id since someone had their current id for almost 4 years.

I think I've got it! The duplicate user ID is registered in another country. So, they would be on eBay.ca, or eBay.uk, or whatever. That's why they could use that ID concurrently with your seller friend.
