I have an old computer that I don't use much anymore but I would like clean it out and use it again.
I have the original recovery CD from when I first got the computer.
How do I wipe the computer clean (it got a virus once and was never the same)and start fresh with the computer? Is that possible?

Use a moist cloth to wipe clean. Maybe add a little hydrogen peroxide to kill any virus.

"Maybe add a little hydrogen peroxide to kill any virus."
I think Norton would be alot better then hydrogen peroxide in killing a virus.

I had another virus protection at the time and have removed it now but I still can't install Norton.
I just want to start all over - can I do that with the CD or do I need to wipe out all the programs one by one?

You'll want to REFORMAT the hard drive. That will make it exactly the same from when you opened the box when it was brand new.
You want to go through the hard drive and move any and all files you want to keep like pictures onto discs.
It could be an all day process if you have stuff to hunt down to save. Once your hard drive is fresh and clean you'll need to download all the updates from microsoft in one batch. Then you can start adding other programs.

good luck on that norton!
I bought a brand spanking new cd from the company itself when mine ran out.
I still haven't been able to get it installed. Norton evidently puts stuff in the registry to keep you from reinstalling their software. I'm going to give the CD one more try on my new Dell and if I still can't install it I will do a chargeback. I've been in communication with them and told them their software s*cks.

I download Norton from the Web.
They want extra to download again in the future.

If you really want to start fresh, buy a New hard drive, then run your restore CD.
Formatting doesn't always get it all.

I just downloaded the Picasa2 from Google and while it's not something I would use to do auction photos with, it's great for finding and (exporting & backing up all your photos from your PC.

One caveat with installing ANYBODY'S AV SW:
They all instruct that ye remove any previous AV's BEFORE installing a new AV...
I've used NORTON for past 5 years (upgraded as necessary) and I've always been very happy with it -- can't say the same about McAfreeze!

well when you get a new computer and it's pre-loaded with XP2 you can't unistall it. I would have to wipe the hard drive clean and install my own XP. However...since it IS already installed, I've been using it and it hasn't been a problem so far. And some of the features I actually like!!
The surgery went ok and I'm just glad to be home again. It was a LONG week. My DH is upset that his doctor said it would be 2-3 months before he could play Golf again, and that's just for ONE surgery! He's got another surgery for the other shoulder as soon as he's able to schedule it. He's still in a lot of pain and I'm staying out of the pain pills But lordy he was hollering for those morphine shots in the hospital!
Thanks for thinking of us.
I was surprised that I was actually able to use my computer in the hospital! That helped. I love that free Netzero dial-up account. It comes in handy when you don't have anything else to use.

Over the past 6 years, I had FOUR LEFT SHOULDER SURGERIES...
Did they give him the SLING with the ICE-WATER BLADDER (built into the sling) & ice chest combo?
If NOT, have him call his DOC immediately!
THIS thing is miraculous & relieves 90% of the excruciating post-op shoulder surgery pain...
You wear it just like a regular sling,,,BUT, in the TOP & SIDE is a BLADDER & a hook-up...PLUS an ice bucket you fill with ice & water...
You then connect the ice-bucket to the sling & fill the bladder with ICED-WATER -- after that water warms to no effect, you DRAIN it out & refill from the ICE-BUCKET!
THE RELIEF THAT THIS SIMPLE DEVICE PROVIDES IS ASTOUNDING!

LOL tom. They actually came into the room the next day after the surgery and tried to sell me one of those! I just kept thinking that I could get one on Ebay for less! It was $99 for a 4 day rental and $279 to buy it.
I found a new one on Ebay for about $100 BIN and a used one with a BIN for $66.
We're just using the cold packs.
If we'd had the surgery done last year he would of had to of had a complete shoulder replacement. This year the doctor was able to offer just to "cap" the ball joint with the same effect. Gotta love new technology.
Bless your heart, 4 surgeries?
Just in case you get to looking for a new orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Lemak IS world renowned. People fly in from all over the world to have him operate.

I'm serious estate! I felt like I was at an undertakers and having the hard-sell on a coffin. I was offended that they sent somebody around to "sell" these things.
I guess that's how you know you're a hard-core Ebay Junkie. When somebody tries to sell you something and you sit there and can't think of anything other than "what do they sell for on Ebay"?
Of course they waited until the man was in dire pain before they told us about these, otherwise I would have had one on hand before we even went up there.

mine was included in the surgeon's fee and covered by ins, so i didn't even look at price --
the first two i did not have it
the last were at mass general with john warner, chief of harvard shoulder service --
but, i'm not too impressed with the ability of anybody to fix a bum shoulder --
if i had it to do over again, i never would have had number one...

If you want to clean up that computer, and you have previously had a virus or used a device driver with overlay files to recognize the hard drive, you need to jot down the make and model ot the hard drive, go to the manufacturer's web site, and download the low level format utility for that drive. Be careful here, you want to be absolutely sure you only download the utility for that EXACT model hard drive. Perform a low level format on the drive, then perform a high level DOS format using the format utility that comes with Windows. Use Fdisk to partition the drive and then install your operating system. Any files you have backed up onto a floppy need to be scanned for viruses before they are transferred onto your hard drive.
