Hi,

Does anyone know how much it costs to insure a shipment to Canada via USPS? I want to send a 33 oz package via air letter post. The only way I've found to see insurance costs through the USPS website is to add registered mail. That adds $8.00 to the cost.

I thought there was a cheaper way. The value of the item is only $10.00. But it's glass and the bidder wants it insured.

USPS does NOT offer INS with LETTER POST -- ya have to use REGISTERED MAIL (expensive) or GLOBAL EXPRESS MAIL (veeeery EXPENSIVE) or insure thru a 3rd party (like Ralphie does) such as DSI

Cheryl, for $10, I'd self insure it. Just charge the buyer $3 for your time and trouble.

No insurance refunds postage, so the most you would be out would be $7.00.

If it should be broken, tell them they either need to return the item or send you digital pictures of the damage. You will never hear from them again.

ltray - I don't usually self-insure, but this just might be a good time to use it.

BTW- my name's Crystal(although Cheryl is, of course, a perfectly lovely name. )

ltray,

DSI covers postage when we insure.

(edited to add: Unless you're a bona fide insurance company, you'll want to steer clear of language like "self-insured" when you speak publicly. And, let's remember, insurance covers the seller and not the buyer. Those who have had generous and kind customers might not have that experience, however, if you've dealt with any attorney, you'd see the light.)

Wow Wayne, maybe I need to checkout DSI?

I don't use much insurance since most of my sales ship FedEx. Plus, I have never had a valid claim of damage yet.

Neither USPS or FedEx refund shipping costs.

I ship about 20% USPS and don't insure unless buyer requests it. The way I pack , they don't need it, but I buy it for them if they ask.

Does DSI do international? And can I buy it for just one package or do I have to insure everything? I don't want to have to send them a report every month of everything I shipped.

WTH did Ralphie just say??!!

YES, ye insures INTERNATIONAL without hassle via DSI...

Now, with their nifty-keen CONTROL PANEL (ya must sign up -- don't confuse THIS with SINGLE PIECE insuring at the site), ye enter the data ONLINE & they charge it at da end of month -- no need to send in a report!

Do one packie or 100 -- only insure what ya wish!

How kewl be that??!!

Pretty kewl tomwii!

I may go check them out. Hadn't looked in a few years. They used to sound like a hassle!

I would definitely like something for international.

I ship a lot of international mail, and can not imagine now using anything but DSI - I used to use USPS (and Canada was a real pain because of the rules) but now there isn't any hassle at all. The best part is that it is just as easy to make a claim. I never trusted I would be paid by the USPS on an international claim (I was 0 for 1) because of the process - i.e. wait 90 days to make a claim, etc.)

I have only had 2 claims against USPS and they did refund the shipping costs.

I thank you for the name compliment. Although, I've always hated my name. My sister's name is Crystal and I've always been jealous of her name.

I'd self-insure in this case. Or, take Tom's advise.

Last time I tried it with USPS -- they donna let me!

ITEM value was $48 + $9 SHIPPING -- I wanted $57 INS, but they wouldn't do greater than $48
