I found this out recently and wanted to share in the event no one has heard about this. I actually found out from two different post offices, so I'm guessing it is pretty definite. For those of you who prepay the postage on the packages and use DC, the post office does not scan them upon receipt. The only time the post office scans DC packages on receipt is when you pay for the postage at the counter and the postal clerk affixes the postage. If you're lucky and get yours scanned, then that's great. But the postal clerks don't have to and my guess is that most won't.

What good is delivery conformation if the post office doesn't scan it?

They do scan them on delivery, but not on receipt.

According to my post office, they are "scanned" when you print them online if you use online postage from either PayPal or their web site. They use the label date as the intial scan date. I've checked several of mine and they are all there right after I print the label.

Cheryl -- It will show that the label has been PRINTED but not that it was received by the PO and shipped.

Here's what one of mine states when I enter the DC number:

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper or shipping partner on May 05, 2005 to expect your package for mailing. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

I'll admit it's rather vague.

They will also scan it received if you request pickup from your home or business and have a carrier get the boxes.

Then we can track it from received thru to delivery.

Yes, that is CORRECT, because, THAT is what you paid either $0.13 or NOTHING for:

For the item to be scanned UPON delivery.

THAT IS IT! Nothing else...

Sometimes, as an accidental goodie, the packie is scanned at the counter so the clerk's computer can charge you.

Delivery Confirmation provides for nothing other than: Delivery Confirmation.

It ain't tracking. The PO specifically states that it ain't tracking...

It is...

which is why I have a great big flaming hot pink label inside my mailbox that says "please scan ALL outgoing mail"

Don't know if it helps or not but I have noticed it takes a few minutes before my mail person leaves.....

My carrier picks up all of my Priority Mail & she scans it as soon as she gets it. I guess you have to have a caring carrier. Maybe because I live in a mobil home park & have a mail box in front of my coach may make a difference.

My carrier told me that his boss told him to scan them when he picks them up. This boss is new and they never did it before. Maybe this is just a requirement for home pickup.

Tom -- That's not entirely true. You can still pay $.13 or free if you print the labels in Shipping Assistant and then bring them to the post office and pay for postage. Then the PO will scan them in and you receive complete tracking.

This is what my labels look like when I mail them and then checked the USPS website.

This is the PayPal Label mailed from my home.
ELECTRONIC SHIPPING INFO RECEIVED, May 02, 2005

Label printed through shipping assistant and mailed and scaned at the PO
The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper or shipping partner on May 04, 2005 to expect your package for mailing. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

The only one that is scanned again after I mail it is the media mail one as it goes from this post office to tne media mail outlet in Lake Forest and they do scan it there.

My mail lady told me that they've recently been asked to scan all pickups. She always scans mine. But I like the reminder notice...

It really depends on your post office. I can tell you I ship from a relatively small post office, and they do scan my packages. I ship over 1000 packages a month, so I do have a decent amount to work with. When there is a problem, I rarely get the expecting your package message. Usually, it shows the package leaving the regional post office that all mail gets shipped from to leave the area.

Tom is correct: DC is Delivery Confirmation which means that delivery is confirmed, nothing more, nothing less. If the PO scans them before they leave the facility then you got a bonus. I have found that some of mine get scanned upon receipt but some don't. Some show the status along the way from my PO to the delivery address but some only show that they were delivered.

Diane,

I have found two work arounds for your problem.

One is to get to really know one of the counter reps at the post office and then wait in line to go to them.

Second is to wait in line and when you get to the counter tell them that you need proof of mailing. This will force them to scan in each package and then give you the printed receipt. By USPS regs you can also require a rural carrier to give you proof of receipt but not a city carrier.

I have emailed the USPS website with the question about if you ask do they have to scan them when you drop off the packages. Will have an answer in a couple of days and will post it here.

WVNavy -- Thank you for the response; however, I only posted this to help other sellers. I don't prepay my postage, so all of my DC packages are scanned in. I only wanted to help out the others, BUT, it seems that everyone needs to debate everything. I hope that I helped others that lurk though.

I posted this mainly because it can be a contention with Paypal. I recently had this happen as a buyer. The seller used prepaid postage and the package wasn't scanned in. Needless to say, I didn't receive my package. I COULD file a chargeback with Paypal and receive a refund because the seller cannot prove that the package was actually mailed -- she can only prove that she printed a shipping label. However, I chose not to file simply because I know that this seller is honest as I have had many great transactions with her in the past. My point is, not all buyers are as understanding and will do a chargeback even though YOU know that the item has been shipped, but have no way of proving it.
