May 25, 2005 - CNBC To Air "The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession" Wednesday, June 29th at 8 PM and 11 PM ET

An Original Documentary Reported by David Faber

If eBay actually employed the 430,000 people who earn an income selling on its site, it would be the second-largest private employer in the United States after Wal-Mart.

"The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession," a CNBC original documentary, offers an unprecedented look at the eBay you don't know. From Europe to Asia to its corporate headquarters in San Jose, CNBC's award winning documentary anchor David Faber offers viewers an exclusive look at how the world's leading online commerce site really operates and delves deeply into the controversies surrounding it including claims of fraud, favoritism and outrage over fee increases.

"The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession" premieres on CNBC on Wednesday, June 29th at 8 PM and 11 PM ET. It will re-air on Friday, July 1st at 8 PM and 11 PM and Sunday, July 3rd at 9 PM and 12 midnight ET.

"The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession" is produced by the same team behind the CNBC's award-winning original documentary "The Age of Wal-Mart: Inside America's Most Powerful Company," as well as the network's other acclaimed original documentaries, "The Big Heist: How AOL Took Time Warner" and "The Big Lie: The Rise and Fraud of WorldCom."

I saw the advertisement for it yesterday when I was watching the Age of Walmart special. It was very interesting & well done. They asked Walmart some tough questions.

About "The eBay Effect"
A CNBC Original Documentary
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession" is the latest production from the Peabody Award winning CNBC Documentary team and reporter David Faber. It's an unprecedented look at the eBay you don't know, with exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the world's leading online commerce site.

An estimated 1.8 billion items, worth approximately $40 billion, are expected to be traded this year on this global electronic marketplace. If eBay employed the 430,000 people who earn an income selling on its site, it would be the nation's number two private sector employer. How did this company, just shy of its 10th birthday, change the fortunes of so many?

On the flip side, "The eBay Effect" also examines why some former users feel betrayed and have deserted the popular auction site. Faber delves into claims of fraud and outrage over fee increases and other controversies surrounding this juggernaut.

"The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession" premieres Wednesday, June 29th at 8 and 11 pm Eastern on CNBC."

They have some Quicktime and Windows Media player Promos & Trailer to watch.

--------------------------------------------

From the Power Sellers Unite web page it also says:
"The eBay Effect - Inside a Worldwide Obsession" premieres on CNBC on Wednesday, June 29th at 8 PM and 11 PM ET. It will re-air on Friday, July 1st at 8 PM and 11 PM and Sunday, July 3rd at 9 PM and 12 midnight ET.

But I'm setting the recorder for tomorrow...

I think Meg should get on Oprah and get a make over. With all the money she makes she can afford it.

THAT was weird. 1.5 hours. It was ON - and then it wasn't.

Should of been two hours at least.

I think the Walmart story was harder hitting.

Although I did think I saw SalGal on there.....

As for Meg going on Oprah and getting a makeover - she needs Extreme Makeover! I sure wouldn't look like that with her $$. No matter how she tried to style that thin assed hair it still looked bad.

I watched the whole thing. Most of it seemed like a puff piece for Ebay. I missed the one part where they showed a seller complaining about some things. What did she complain about?

About the way Meg looks, my experience with my daughter and daughter's friends in Silicon Valley is that most of them, and highly placed, too, don't care about makeup. Our daughter has had very high-powered jobs in Sun Microsystems and Adobe, dresses like Meg but with pants that fit, hair much better though, but never wears any makeup. It doesn't seem to matter there. (I'm sure there are exceptions, but I haven't seen any.)

And. . . their significant others love them just as much.

I agree, though, that Meg, for a TV appearance, could do something with her hair and face, bless her heart.

If CNBC had asked some of us, we'd have told them to show a REAL Ebay room. And the show never told the viewers how the guy did his photos and got them up on line (at least, I didn't see it).

I think thats where Meg got her clothes, Walmart. Her jackets didn't fit, her pants were too short and Penny loafers with white socks to go to a board meeting? She certainly doesn't dress as an executive, Silicone valley or not

Personally I thought it was pretty interesting. I learned alot. The sellers they chose to speak with were interesting for different reasons. The family on the farm in Iowa was,to me, inspiring. We live in a small very rural area... they certainly gave me food for thought. I don't hold out hope that the things about ebay that I don't like I can do much to change. The only thing I can change is me.... I want to make that kind of money... if they can I can!
As for Megs appearance... who cares she is obviously comfortable with herself. Thats all one can ask, do I love and accept me the way I am? All I want from Meg Whitman is to drive more buyers to the site. To make a strong healthy safe site for me and you to do business on... thru.

All in all it was not hard hitting at all... it was a love affair by the reporter... the $85 sale sucked him in like it has all of us.

Lets see, this a brilliant woman in a position of power at one of the strongest companies in the country dealing with global marketing issues and all you guys can come up with is she dresses badly and doesn't wear enough make-up. I notice that no one is bitching about the founders early ponytail and t-shirt or the jeans and t-shirt mentality of the Google founders. And you wonder why women are described a catty and superficial.

Good point, Fenix. I guess I was surprised; usually any TV people will put some sort of makeup on a star before filming. Meg may have insisted on none, which is certainly her prerogative.

I watched again this morning and the only thing that I saw that was "valuable" information was the person who said that CC is the ONLY way to go when buying something off of Ebay - forget the PP buyer protection/insurance. Was that the fraud prevention CEO or something?

They should of said something about bidding/winning something that stinks or has animal hair etc all over it. They made it sound so rosy for the most part.

I agree - the producer was sucked in by his own auction and didn't tell the heartaches and true Ebay story.

ps - I wasn't being catty about her hair and lack of makeup. She's just one of these women that has had ONE hairdo for lack of anything better. WE don't wear makeup where I live. The biggest culture shock I ever got was moving from Florida to Alabama. THOSE girls are raised from birth to be beauty queens and they don't go to the grocery store without the whole hair and makeup treatment! I was raised here where the first time I ever had a job where I HAD to wear shoes was when I moved to South FL and worked for Walt Disney. Makeup? Once a month - maybe. Usually less.

But maybe Meg is like Donald Trump. Did you see him on Oprah - "is my hair THAT bad?" LOL

YES!

I guess I shouldn't say that - I cut my own hair with my FlowBee. Love it.

WHAT? Did you never have a sleepless night in the late 80's? the Flowbee is a virtual pop culture icon.

It's a hair cutting system that hooks up to your vaccuum cleaner. You can adjust the length of the cut by adding more of the clear extenders.
