Coming Soon: Enhancements to My Messages
In response to the comments and suggestions of many eBay users, My Messages is being upgraded with important new features. You will soon be able to receive important messages about your eBay account, as well as responses to your Customer Support inquiries in My Messages. You will also be able to exchange messages confidently and securely with other eBay members.
Beginning in late May, you will begin to see visual enhancements related to these new features, though some of the features will not be operational until late June:
* On your My Messages page you will be able to manage up to ten personal folders for organizing your My Messages communications in the way that works best for you.
* A Sent folder will let you keep copies of your outgoing messages. (Your sent folder will be empty until the full launch of My Messages in late June.)
* The addition of an alert reminder (with the "Hello, username" greeting) at the top of your page. This reminder will only be present when you have account alerts in My Messages and will remain until the alert has been acted upon.
* The modification of Customer Support forms. (You'll notice slight changes to these forms - both color and layout.)
Please take some time to become familiar with the upcoming changes to My Messages by taking a quick tour and reading our Frequently Asked Questions. As always, we value and welcome your ongoing feedback.

It will make them money because they can keep controls on people trying to sell off ebay via the ebay "contact buyer/seller" links.
Lately though, I have almost been almost afraid to click on the ASQ's email because of all the phishing emails - maybe this will be the answer to that problem.

I agree with Neglus. This is the first step to an email system wholly within the Ebay site, for registered Ebay members only. I predict that by June of next year, it will be impossible to obtain an email address from Ebay for any user. It will also be impossible for a non Ebay member to contact any registered member. The ASQ link will disappear, and the bottomfeeders will have to register and use the "make best offer" option and Ebay will get their cut. All communications between Ebay members will have to be made through the "My Messages" port. It will eliminate the problem of spoofs and phishing emails as well as the growing problem of users who do not update their contact info when they move or change email addresses. This system will certainly play hell with post auction management services such as those provided by Vendio, but I'm sure that Ebay will be offering a post sale management system that will work with their site. For a fee, of course.

I would have been against this before, but now, I am fine with it. I am plain tired of so many of my email messages to customers not being delivered or interpreted as SPAM. It's a real problem, that ebay needs to address to protect their business.

I send my own EOA messages to my buyers by clicking on the buyer's e-mail address in the EOA message Ebay sends me. Do you read the new rules as not allowing this kind of communication?

If you cannot e-mail buyer through any other way I can see it making them money #1: if you use Ebay image hosting. I have had several buyers in the past request an additional photo which I emailed to them This way, one would have to add another photo to the auction and those .15 cents can add up considering the # of requests there must be for this. #2 Also would mean that you could not sell directly to a buyer who missed the auction by bypassing Ebay which I am certain many people do.

I too forsee ebay taking control of the emails. It's their next step to total monopoly. It could be a good thing in regards to the phishing emails and right now everyone is scared to *click any and all links*
hmmmm what will happen to the 3rd party auction managers?
