If eBay raised basic listing fee to $.50 what would you do? Given the steady deterioration in the rate of growth for the U.S. auction business eBay has been desparately trying to find ways to increase profits. Although they have attempted to grow the business in numerous non-auction venues the auction continues to be the large core of their business model. Based on how eBay has operated to date it is pretty clear to me that within a reasonably short time period (probably under two years) we will be looking at a basic listing fee of $.50 with another $.50 for the gallery. So how would this effect what you do on eBay? If you were pretty sure that my estimates are correct would it influence you to start doing something different now or in the near future? Does it tempt you to explore other ventures for selling online? Remember when eBay starting listings were $.25 and the maximum comission rate was 5%. When the BUY IT NOW option was offered initially it was either free or 5 cents. So even though Ebay should have experienced MASSIVE economies of scale as they have grown the business which should have allowed them to easily maintain or actually decrease listing and final value fees they have taken the opposite track. Clearly there is no reason to expect them to change this pattern of behavior. So the question is what are you going to do about it if anything at all.

Well, I don't know about anyone else but I am going to stomp my feet, pound my fists, sing songs of protest start online petitions cause lord knows that that has been so succeffull in the past.

What wil I do? Well, first of all, increasing the basic listing fee won't really effect me and for those that will effect... why is it going to take another increase for them to start exploring their outside options?

No, I'm saying -- I'm merely -- I'm saying what I'm saying. I don't know why I'm always having people say, are you trying to say -- you know what you can do if you want to know what I'm saying is listen to what I'm saying. What I'm saying is what I said ...

If eBay raised rates, I don't think it would affect listings much. People would still list because they don't want to move to another auction site (start feedback from scratch, etc).

Most people don't notice that eBay makes most of its money from Final Value Fees anyways.

My sales are doing quite well considering the time of year it is. I don't think it would make much difference with me. I'd have to raise my prices, though, to reflect the change.

If Ebay raises their fees .50 cents, you do the same thing you do when USPS, FedEx or UPS raises their rates, or when the oil companies raise the price of a gallon of gas by .50 cents. You scream, holler, P&M like a 4 year old, call those greedy bastards everything you can think of. Then you cool down, have a couple shots 2 buck chuck, and start work revising your business plan.
