I have a former 'ebay store' chair I am revamping the listing on, to launch to auction ...
I am wondering if any of you are knowledgeable on what 'style' of chair this is known as ... also, what do you think the finials are; either acorn or pineapples? ...

Any helpful input would be greatly appreciated ... (even beloved Classicrock's "list it as a piece of crap ugly chair" LOL ... (luv ya classic )

They look like pineapples to me, estatesalestuff. As for the style, haven't a clue.

Are you sure it didn't belong to Patton instead of Rockefeller? Those finials look like hand grenades to me.

What style it is, I love it. I have an OLD chair up in the attic here that has no seat and no back. Someone at one time tried to put a makeshift seat and back on it, but I ripped it off. It was hideous. Now, I have to find someone who can do it properly at a reasonable cost. It's a great old chair that's been in this house for years and years. I also have an antique rocker with a cane bottom in need of repair. My mother told me you can get kits to do that yourself. Ya, right. Somehow I can't picture myself doing it. Well, I probably could but you wouldn't want to sit in it. You'd probably fall through it. LOL!

I'm no "expert" but I have dealt in a lot of furniture. The style is Eastlake cottage.

Thanks ... Cheryl, there is a park lodge near my place where 'caners' meet every couple of months to cane chairs ... I don't know if they take in chairs they haven't found themself, but I could find out for you if you want. I'm thinking maybe, because all our cane chairs that Pops left behind were recaned nicely, but we're not sure where he had them done. Too many of his secrets buried with him.

I guess I'll call it a Victorian Eastlake w/Pineapples Piece of Crap Chair (in deference to Classic) .... oh, and I won't use any photos.

Have a great TGIF everybody

That is definately considered a pineapple motif. The pineapple was and still is considered a a symbol of hospitality. It was used in many 18th century decor.

In fact, pineapples originated in South America and are not native to Hawaii. The first record of pineapple in Hawaii is in mid January of 1813.

I have some high-end Stiffel lamps that have a pineapple motif in the base. It is not uncommon to see a pineapple motif in furniture. Today's imports and furniture reproduction often use it. Open a Bombay or Ballard Designs catalog and you'll see the motif used; even stand alone pineapple finials. A couple of finials on eBay at $29.99.
