you can downgrade your business/premier account to personal account, but they will still do it.
you can refuse to accept and they will ignore your email and complain why you dont ship their items?
You will lose seller protection if you downgrade.
Best is to remove Paypal or sell on other venues where paypal is not well known.

PayPal will get you coming and going on this one. Problem with downgrading to a personal account is you do not get sellers protection on a personal account. You must have a business or premier account to get sellers protection. I kept my business account with them, but still write that I only accept credit cards directly through my merchant account. About 75% of my payments come that way. In fact, it is almost to the point that I am going to be dropping PayPal for the much more secure and far less costly merchant account. And the best part, I don't get charged to accept checks or cash like with PayPal.

Do I get paid with a credit card through PayPal. Sure. But not too often.

If you don't want to get a merchant account, you could offer bidpay.com.

I don't accept credit cards through PayPal. I indicate that they can pay by PayPal but that it is from existing bank funds or e-check and that they must check with seller (you can't exceed $500/month).

Doing okay with that. Have the occassional moaner and complainer but they haven't been around as long. Since I'm a seasonal seller, I'm may change my default. I won't mention PayPal until I send end of auction notice. That seems to work better.

As far as seller security? All the buyer has to do is say "item not as described" and there's your loophole!

I'm waiting to see what Google is going to have since that was just announced yesterday that they are delving into the account payment system.

I have been using P/P from its beginning & have never had a problem with credit cards. In fact I openly state in my TOS that I take credit cards through P/P.

As I said, up to this point I have never had a problem. What may happen next week is a horse of a different color.

NO,buyer must say ITEM GROSSLY NOT AS DESCRIBED to get Paypal to look into the transaction closely.

They also have to return it at their expense with tracking. They don't get to clain it's not as described then keep the item and get a refund.

No, I'm saying -- I'm merely -- I'm saying what I'm saying. I don't know why I'm always having people say, are you trying to say -- you know what you can do if you want to know what I'm saying is listen to what I'm saying. What I'm saying is what I said ...

Its like a lawsuit, anyone can sue. Either way, its a loophole and it works. As most of you are veteran sellers, I know you only allow charges as much as your willing to lose.

I'm new to this. If I have a personal account and only accept funds from a bank account, does seller protection come into play? If the funds come from a bank account could paypal still take money from my account if the buyer complained?

can't you read?
several of us have said if you have personal account, there is no seller protection.
yes, paypal will take money away from your paypal account if someone files a complaint-
they could restrict your account before the outcome depending on the amount in question and what kind of complaint they file??
But they cannot access your bank account.

PayPal is really only necessary for US sellers as other countries long ago adopted direct bank to bank account transfers - usually free for domestic ones.

agitprop,
the essence of Paypal is for the buyer to use his credit card and for the seller to accept credit card without applying for merchant account.
Once again, you miss the boat on good old USA customs,we are addicted to our plastic!!
FYI,USPS comes up with a system using bank to bank transfer,it never fly!

My biggest concern is that sometime down the line, the buyer would do a charge back with their card company, I am out the money since it is past the 30 day time frame for Paypal. I stopped accepting Paypal when Ebay acquired the company and started to hear about the horror stories of situations of buyers pulling things on sellers especially International. But I feel that by not accepting it, it might truly effect my sales in the long run. Does everyone on this board accept Paypal? Have you honestly had any charge backs from card companies?

It's happened to me. Only problem is PayPal has become so popular, they have you by your blls. Is your sales less because you don't accept PayPal. Probably. But you can minimize the damage by having a merchant account. In fact, in my case using the merchant account has proved to be used far more than PayPal.

having a merchant account is not going to stop the bidders to file chargeback, you just have one less layer to deal with:your merchant account provider will notify you that a chargeback has been made and you should gather all your defenses and fax/mail to them.
With paypal,it is paypal who will inform you and you gather all your defenses and fax to paypal and paypal fax to their merchant account provider who in turn fax to the bidder's cc issuer.
It is the bidder's cc issuer who has the final say.
