I sell international, and like most of you have no problems with it and have a nice base of customers around the globe. However, this was quite interesting.

Woman in Austria bought a game from me, claimed to be paying with BidPay -- same day I get a rejection from BidPay. So I wrote back with a payment reminder and this was her reply:

It is not possible from Austria to send a Money Order to the U.S.I need Your Bank account number and Bankname and adress. Its only possible to send a money Transfer from Bank to Bank.No cheques.

Oh yeah. I'm giving out my bank account # over the internet in order to have it drained. HAHAHAHA!

Actually, they can not drain it with just the number. They use it for a direct wire transfer. Check with your bank before answering.

ditto deja's response

but also know that although I've never had a problem with direct wire transfers; there may be a significant bank fee for you regardless of the amount.

I wouldn't in a million years give out your bank info to this person. The reason bidpay rejected the payment is because it was a stolen or closed account, most likely stolen. They actually have the safe guard in place the PayPal does not. This person can send money via bidpay if they are legite, but clearly are scammers. It is well known the scammers are going into US bank accounts and draining them at will. You are better off not making the sale then getting ripped off in this case.

Actually Stone - it could be something much more more simple and less sinister... Bidpay does not accept Mastercard on international payments.

Peikik - the reason they asked for your baking info is that eurpoean banking is light years ahead of the US system and bank to bank transfers such as what this buyer is suggesting are quite common. (Haven't we already said this about 102 times?)

If you are not comfortable with this, suggest travelers cheques.

Here's the reply I got after telling them to get and send U.S. Cash (a risk, but figured it was better than giving them my account #).

From Austria (as usual in international banking agreements) we can only
transfer to an Bank Account number.

Please submit your banking account number

Seems a little pushy on the getting the account # to me.

I wouldn't do it either because I'm not sure it's safe for an international transaction.

But, everytime we pay a seller or anyone by check we are sending them our bank account number.

Edited to add:
toolbuyer's advice is a very sound.
Check with your bank to see if there is a fee even if just for future reference & double check it because wrong advice is common.

Depending on the bank it generally costs between $20-30 to recieve an internation transfer (quite a racket!!).
