I'm in an awful mess. Sunday I got a new ISP and e-mail address, went through alllll the hoops of notifying everyone, had auctions ending Sunday night, and 5 of my buyers sent their payments Sunday night and Monday to my old e-mail address, which PayPal in its infinite wisdom chose to accept. There's a zero balance in my PayPal account, though. No money at all. I just discovered thisproblem by accidentally picking up e-mails from my cancelled e-mail address!

Is it possible for me to notify these buyers and ask that they cancel their payments and then send them to my new address at PayPal? I'm willing to do it, although I hate to put them out like that.

I've sent a hostile note to PayPal tonight asking them to straighten this out. What a mess.

I don't understand why you would want to cancel their payments??? Can you log in to PayPal and transfer the money to your bank account or are you "locked out"? All of the details of their payments are kept right there on PayPal - you don't need your old email account to read them and process them.

Can't you just add the new email address to your account until everything clears out and then do the change of address?

Neglus: PayPal has already locked out my old e-mail addresses, including the one I had for these auctions that have paid.

I can't sign into PayPal to do what you suggest! PayPal has already processed my request Sunday afternoon to add my new email address and delete the two old ones. I am Tearing My Hair.

Couldn't I just ask the buyers to cancel their payments where they've put them and then pay again? (I know it's asking a lot of them.) Maybe PayPal will come through with some answers for me tomorrow (dream on, huh).

Road - they should be able to cancel the payment. If the address is not registered to a PayPal account then it should show as Pending in thier "Overview" and they would have the option to cancel the payments (There is a Cancel button clearly visable to them) if that button is not there, you have a problem and you are going to need to speak with PayPal.
In the future, I would allow a 2-3 week overlap between closing an email account and removing that email address from your PayPal account to avoid this kind of problem.

Good Luck!!!

BTW - If you can log into the email address to pick up the mail, why not just add it back to your account?

No, I'm saying -- I'm merely -- I'm saying what I'm saying. I don't know why I'm always having people say, are you trying to say -- you know what you can do if you want to know what I'm saying is listen to what I'm saying. What I'm saying is what I said ...

I dont understand why she blames Paypal when she is the one who lacks good planning?
Fenix,
she cannot log on to her old email addr as she is now with a different ISP.

Why cancel the old emails. I have about six of them on file. Don't receive email from them anymore but occasionally someone whose records are not up to date does send me money.

Hi
I believe that Road said in another thread that her ISP closed down suddenly and she was not notified that they were closing down so she didn't know she needed to change her email address with ebay and paypal.

Road I think the best thing to do is contact paypal by phone and I'm sure they can help you fix this mess.

I would contact all the buyers and let them know of your address change so they will realize that you can not ship till the funds become available in your new account or if paypal can fix the problem for you.

I appreciate all the help my pals here have given me. And Tonimar is right; the ISP death was without warning. And yes, I didn't do everything right; this had never happened to me, folks. When I got up this morning I decided that if I can't get my money back, I'll chalk it up to my Ebay 101 tuition. Live and learn.

Fenix, thanks so much for your advice. I'm going to do what you've suggested in about three minutes. Adele

Adele- I am sure you will get your money back. I am sure a call to PayPal will resolve it. PS: I once sent money to wrong email address and could cancel it (see Fenix's comments - I think there is a prominent button for that as long as payment has not been claimed).

What would happen if you went back in and added the email address again?? It maybe worth a try.

I was thinking the same thing...but then what would prevent me from adding anybody else's email address to my account - could I get their payments?? They must have some kind of cross check (in very least sending an email to the address being added which won't work for Roadsmith because she has no access to that email).

yes, they have a cross-check. if you added someone else's e'mail address, they would get an e'mail with a link in it to confirm the change.

adding a dead e'mail address doesn't work because the e'mail goes to the dead e'mail address...i once had to deal with something similar in changing servers. i had to briefly go back in and add back the service i was canceling. it was a big pita but was the only way to temporarily "revive" a dead and dying e'mail address.

You guys are not reading what she said, the ISP went belly up.
If it were just her closing her account with an ongoing ISP,usually there is some kind of service which will forward emails from old ISP to new ISP,but in this case it is not possible.

i know she said her isp went belly up. i was just saying what to do in the other two circumstances. i have NO idea what she's supposed to do about her particular situation but thought others might want to know how it works in the other two situations. i think she's probably scr_wed, is what i really think, re: dead isp.

Hey Stone - it probably won't work but will only take a few seconds to find out so what the heck. She took the email address off - it wasn't rejected.

You guys are just great, and I didn't mean for you all to go to so much trouble for me--but I do appreciate it.

I sent the following e-mail to the five who've already paid through PayPal, and one has already taken care of it. Let's hope. Meanwhile, of course, I'm stilllll waiting for any help from Ebay and Paypal, and I may not need it if all your great advice works. Adele

"I wonder if I could ask a huge favor of you? Your payment to PayPal for this book went into my old e-mail account with PayPal, and I'm unable to access it. Would you please go to your account in PayPal, see if your payment to me of $XXX is still "pending," and, if it is, click the "cancel" button. Then make a new payment to my NEW e-mail address, XXXXXXXXX. Take a dollar off your payment, too, for your troubles.

"I've been through a dreadful mess here with my ISP closing its doors with no warning just as my auctions were ending Sunday night. and appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks so much."

This might sound kind of petty, but wouldn't it be in your better interest to sign up with PayPal with a Yahoo or Hotmail type of e-mail account? At least then if your ISP does go belly up, all you have to do is get a new ISP. Your ebay, paypal or other online accounts wouldn't be effected at all. I guess I write this because losing an ISP has happened to me before as well. Twice. But since I use a Yahoo e-mail for those, all of my accounts were not effected. All I had to do is get a new ISP and that was it. I just picked up from there like any other day.

Thanks, ladyjewels. I need all the encouragement I can get today.

Stonecold: Your idea is a good one. I want to be sure I understand it. You have an e-mail address dedicated just to your PayPal payments and you get it through Yahoo or such?

you're right stone, having a yahoo or hotmail addy is a big help - it's saved me in a pinch before when changing ISPs. not to mention which, when i buy online other than ebay, order dvds online, etc., i use that junker e'mail account. saves my real e'mail box from getting filled up with a snowballing amount of junk.

This is exactly what I have done. I have Verizon DSL, but my email address for P/P is a hotmail.com. So no matter what ISP I usem my P/P account email never changes & it costs me nothing.

This just in! Update: Four of my five buyers have now gone into PayPal and sent a new payment. Two took the dollar off, as I offered. One gave me an extra dollar for using PayPal on a low-cost item. I swear that book buyers are the greatest people in the world. I'm feeling MUCH better this afternoon!
