Not sure about money orders but I have experience with certified checks. I had one of those end up lost in the mail one time. I mailed it as payment to FL for a high dollar ebay win. When seller and I came to the conclusion that it was lost I made a trip to the bank. OH MY GOD!!! Pray you never have a certified check lost in the mail. God himself would have a hard time puting a stop payment on one. One reason they call them "certified", it's guranteed funds. Even after I cancled it I had to wait 3 month's until they would credit the money back into my checking account. Good greif Charlie Brown. That's was the last time I ever mailed a certified check.
What kind of money order was it? A postal money order? If so you might want to inquire at the post office.

If it's a personal money order, such as you purchase at your bank, you can stop payment the same as a personal check. Other types of money orders are more difficult to stop payment on, but it can be done providing he hasn't cashed it yet. It'll take you a good length of time to get your money back, though. Two to three months in most cases.
Mike...Whenever you go to the bank to stop payment on a cashier's check, be sure to pack a lunch and take it with you, because you'll be there awhile. You are lucky they didn't make you post a bond. Most banks will unless you provide a police report that shows it was physically stolen from you. ALWAYS send a cashier's check via Registered mail and insure it for enough to cover the amount of the check plus the cost of the aforementioned lunch you will take to the bank with you if it gets lost or stolen.

sparkz - You got it right when you said "pack a lunch". I must have been there for over 45 minutes and filled out more paperwork and signed my name more times then I did when I bought my house. What a nightmare. Luckily I know most of the people that work at the bank very well. I went to school with most of them so we have long term friendships established. Thank god for small hometown banks. I would hate to think what they would have put the normal schmoo off the street through.
