oh yeah? huh! One side is shaped like a dull axe, the top part like a crowbar and the other side is like . . the flat part of a hammer. The brown you see is rust not plastic coated. It's all metal. I assume it's made of iron.

The "crowbar" is like a "cat's paw"....for pulling nails.
I don't understand the "ax" part of it, but I believe a roofing tool is not far off the mark. It could very well be that.

Right a cat's claw. I have a couple of slim jims? No, that's not the name! Its a flat bar with a little L shape to the end. I had to buy them when I took the paneling off of the walls to insulate the room. It was great for easing the old mahogoney paneling off without cracking it and pulling out the finishing nails. I can't remember the name of it though. Easy Jim? oh heck, I think I am suffering from oldsheimers a little tonight

Tuna is correct, or a wood working tool. You have a nail puller, hammer, hatchet, pry bar. Looks like it is in nice shape. Is that a leather cover on the handle?

yes, it's wood. I'll never use it so I'm going to try to list it. Maybe I can get $5 for it.
I have a hand full of tools to list. Anyone know how I can find the history of an old defunct saw company in california? It was pretty big prior to the silicon valley thing. It made alot of saws and farm equipment due to the huge amounts of orchards and farms that were there. The name of it was Valley Saw Company of San Jose california. I have searched and searched. I can't find when they went out of business. Maybe it was in the 1960's Can someone point me in the right direction?

Valley Saw was alive and kicking until 2000 and they may be in business still. I'll check and see.
They are kinda famous on the musical saw circuit. (I bet you didn't even know there was such a thing as a musical saw circuit, lol.)
Here's an article from 2000 where they are mentioned.
http://www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/07.20.00/slices-0029.html
"Many of the specially built saws are manufactured by Valley Saw Company in East San Jose, which specialized in manufacturing pruning tools until the collapse of Santa Clara Valley's orchard economy."

OH MY GOODNESS ! I don't believe it! I searched and found that same site. but due to it's saying the following, I thought it was out of business.: Many of the specially built saws are manufactured by Valley Saw Company in East San Jose, which specialized in manufacturing pruning tools until the collapse of Santa Clara Valley's orchard economy.
Thanks so much Zippy

I think they must still be producing saws for other purposes as well because I find it hard to believe that a company can live by musical saws alone.
But, I've been wrong before!

Gawd! Musical saws. Growing up, my church was on the "revival" circuit and all the traveling musicians (guitarists, failed Hollywood "stars" and "singers" who found God and dedicated their "talents" to Him). My second-to-least favorite were the musical saws who played "I Come to the Garden Alone" and other gems on those damned things. Horrible.
My Very Least Favorite was a church member, Mrs. Shingledecker (really!), who was a gospel whistler and would WHISTLE "I Come to the Garden Alone" and other gems. I was church organist and could not STAND that crap.

I swear I'm going to write a book about being the preacher's daughter in those churches Dad had. This week I'm going to Scottsdale for a reunion of 10 of us who were teenagers in the youth group of that church, inter-dated of course, got into minor trouble occasionally, etc. Two of the ten are gay men, interestingly enough, whom I adore. We're getting together for 3 days of talking about how our teen experiences affected us pro or con and where we are now. One of the women is an atheist now; I'm an agnostic; two went to Bob Jones and are still super-devout, so it should be a fascinating 3 days. I'll remind them of the musical saws and the gospel whistler (who had a son who was mortified by his mother's "testimony in whistle)."
