Saw this and had to ask what you guys think about:

http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200610.shtml#2006-10-02120653

Here's the content of this announcement:

Feedback is the cornerstone of trust on the eBay marketplace. A seller's Feedback provides buyers the opportunity to make informed decisions about their bids and purchases. It helps instill buyer confidence, and it helps protect the marketplace against fraud.

We believe that buyers should have access to a seller's complete Feedback record before choosing to trade with that seller. For this reason we are restricting selling activities for members who have private Feedback. This is a global change and will affect all eBay sites. The expected date of this change is October 26, 2006.

What will change

Members who have private Feedback profiles will no longer be allowed to list items after this change goes into effect. Only members with public Feedback profiles will be permitted to list items.

Any items listed before the change will not be impacted. However, they may not be re-listed by sellers who keep their Feedback profiles private.

Members who wish to make their Feedback profiles private can still do so. However, they must cancel any existing listings, and they will not be allowed to create new listings as long as their Feedback is private.

Why we're making this change
eBay offers the ability for members to make their Feedback private as an option when they have significant concerns about a comment. They can hide their comments in this way until they are able to resolve the issue. (Read about Mutual Feedback Withdrawal).

Buyers should have all the information available about their prospective sellers' past trading histories. This helps them make knowledgeable choices about doing business with that seller. Prohibiting members with private Feedback profiles from listing items will ensure we help maintain a safe and well-lit marketplace.

Whether you're a buyer or a seller, your Feedback Profile is a valuable asset that helps earn the trust of other eBay members. We strongly encourage members to keep their Feedback profiles public so everyone in the marketplace can benefit from the Feedback other eBay Community members have left them.

***********************
I personally think it's a good change and should be interesting to see some of those "hidden" feedback comments if those with Private Feedback want to sell something again...

What do you think?

I like it, there is something too secretive to Private feedback. What are you hiding? I would never buy from someone with Private Feedback.

Just saw this on the announcements page.

A welcome step in the right direction! I like it and I think most users will, with the probable exception of certain sellers (like one recently mentioned who likes to use wow'zer in their descriptions.

I bought once from a seller with private feedback.
Asked him the reason why it kept it private and he told me that he buys on Ebay to resell and didn't want to reveal which items he bought and who from.

I'd never thought of that possibility until he told me. Good reason to me to keep it private.

About time they did that. NOW for them to make International people have to reveal theirs for those that are private due to their country's objections or whatever it is that says can't see the feedback. I have had several potential buyers that the feedback was not viewable due to country they live in.

Ummm, that sure sounds like BS to me.

For one thing, his bid history is still searchable, even if his feedback is private. Secondly, it's very easy to establish a separate ID solely for buying. All you need is a second email address.

I have a separate buying ID. Not because I buy to resell but because I like to keep my selling feedback separate from my buying feedback. Some sellers are whacked and unpredictable but you don't always know that until you are in the thick of a transaction.

I REALLY like this new rule. Anything that may help cut down on shilling is A-OK with me!

Edited to add: My post was in response to "Asked him the reason why it kept it private and he told me that he buys on Ebay to resell and didn't want to reveal which items he bought and who from." Irked slipped in while I was typing that, lol.

About Time! I'll second that!

Only two reasons I can figure out for keeping feedback private; shilling and excessive negs.

I see a "private" feedback seller-rating and back out immediately. Have never bought from one -- and never will.

So. . . does this mean if you're a buyer, not a seller, you can still have private feedback? If so, that's not fair.

For eBay, a giant step forward instead of backward or sideways.

I've had the same argument about buying to resell from those private ones as well, and while you can search their bidding history, that expires in 30 days, but with FB, you can sometimes go back several months. And not everyone understands or wants to deal with multiple IDs. (I have on occasion forgotten who I am when bidding).

I have a line in my TOS that covers the right to cancel bids from buyers with private FB which has saved me once or twice.

I disagree. If you are going to buy items to resell, get a buying ID.

I do not think it had anything to do with the USA Ebay, it is probably Meg conforming to the wants and desires of the international market and government regualtion's in places like India and China.

I've seen sellers with 100% Positive FB who keep their FB private.
It is often done with ladies lingerie because many cross dresser buy in this category so the sellers keeps it private to protect the winners. I have a friend who sells vintage lingerie and she says 75-85% if her buyers are men. Welcome to Wacky world of ebay!!!

I'm glad, but I'm confused by the couple of replies that mention shilling as being one reason for private feedback. How does private feedback have ANY effect on shilling?
