Long after the horse has bolted eBay management have decided to close the stable door. Henceforth let it be known that: eBay sellers who have private Feedback profiles will no longer be allowed to list items. Only eBay members with public Feedback profiles will be permitted to sell items. Current listings will not be affected. However, they may not be re-listed by eBay sellers who keep their Feedback profiles private.
eBay sellers who wish to make their Feedback profiles private can still do so. However, they must cancel any existing listings, and they will not be allowed to create new listings as long as their Feedback is private. That is all.

About dang time. I never bought from sellers with private feedback just for that reason, they had private feedback. The feedback system might not be perfect but it doesn't work at all if you can not read any of it.
Hey, wait a minute. Is this the first smart move ebay has made in a long time. Bet they are planning on a huge snafoo soon to make up for it.

For once, Ebay got this one correct. The only reason to have private feedback is to screw over buyers anyway (JMHO). Ebay has a bad enough reputation, most of it earned, that this is clearly a step in the right direction.
The bigger question is, "Is it too late or not?"

I don't know why ebay had to make that rule. If I find a seller with private feedback, I simply don't have to bid. You can't see what the feedback comments are, but you can still see how many positives and negatives a seller has. I checked out a private feedback seller and he/she had all positives...no negative comments. If ebay is so concerned, they should just do away with private feedback altogether.

Some bidders dont want anyone to know what they bidded on.
They could be dealers with brick and mortar stores looking to stock up.

Private feedback never bothered me as a buyer or even as a seller.
I have had buyers with priv feedback buy and because of the type of items they buy they don't want others to know. They are dealers who buy always the same type of items.
I also bought from sellers with priv feedback and like annekila mentioned I check how many positives/negs they have and make my decision, either I buy or I don't.
I think Ebay feels they are loosing money if a buyer/seller keeps his feedback priv.

I bot a bootlegg DVD movie from a seller with private feedback.
She refunded my money without asking me to return the item and now she has been Naru'd.
There is one neg in her feedback file but with private feedback there is no way to know she is selling bootlegg dvd(she has only been selling on Ebay for a short time,so she has few feedbacks).
So I am glad Ebay has this new rule,if you want to sell, why not let your prospective customers read your feedback??
Same goes with Chinese sellers selling antique japanese samurai swords from China and antique Chinese artifacts going back thousand of years, they should make their feedback public so we know these items are repros.
