What is the pix size to begin with?
What do you mean the old photoshop won't work with new pic what format is it the new photo that is that won't work in photoshop.
You might try resizing the image to something like 800 to 900 pix in one side and make sure the option to keep aspect ratio is checked so it changes the other side to correct pix after choosing just one side. Then click "save as" or save copy as and then check the file to see what KB size it says after doing a resize. If still too big try a smaller pix size and this will tell you about how much you have to reduce an image. Really need to know what format your camera is taking them in. Plus save any image you reduce into a JPG format or a gif format. just remember you loose some image quality more in gif format than jpg format though you probably won't loose that much if for auction quality images. If you save an image don't click save or you will loose original image always work with a copy of original or click file and "SAVE AS" then when you close original image never save changes to it as it will change original image and then you loose it.

Photoshop 5.5 on has a program built in called image ready which optimizes your photos.
It scales by pixels or inches as wellas resolution.

Thanks for replys..was panicking..haven't been able to put anything in Ebay for 3 mos. 3 kids in college...Used to use Adobe Photo Deluxe 3.0---could do everything to image manually just by using my mouse and it took literally seconds to crop, color name file and save but my the software kept shutting down because of an upgraded computer we bought...The new software I bought ..which is the next basic Adobe software available..appears to be a lot more advanced...have been trying to learn it for weeks and the stumper has been resizing the images...They ask about layers too...gosh--don't want to know what a photos' layers are...gosh! Going to try to up put some pics in auction and see what happens.
Oh...my camera is a 1988 Sony Mavica Digital that uses floppy discs...takes jpeg pics that are 640 x 480 or 26.5 K...that's what they say on the floppy when opened.

That is a good size already you can't up the size of them and I don't think you want to reduce the size or they will be too small. the mavica takes great closeups. There are several free image programs that will crop and edit images for you. But if you are using that camera for your images you don't need to crop really if you will get up close to begin with. Mine a Mavica 73 does great closeups.
do a google for Irfanview or FastStone image software.

It sounds as though you're using Photoshop Elements. Cropping and adjusting levels should be easy.
The function you want to use is "Save for web" (it's awkward, but the shortcut is Ctrl-Shift-Alt-S, believe it or not I can do it without looking by now!). Select JPG (the first time, it will remember), quality is up to you (I use high, medium is fine), and set the pixel size to something reasonable (between say 400 and 700 on the longest dimension) making sure that "constrain proportions" is turned on (otherwise it will look squished/elongated vertically or horizontally). The click OK to save.

I use Adobe elements - both 2.0 and 3.0. I use the inches option rather than the pixels.
Image resize -> Document size -> Image size and the drop down box give you beaucoup options...

BTW, part of your question, how many pixels = 1KB doesn't really have an answer when you're talking JPEG. You could have a simple image that measures 1000x1000, and it will be a small jpeg file. A complex image (say a closeup of fabric) that is much smaller pixel count-wise would be incredibly larger file size-wise. A wide dynamic range from shadows to highlights will also make for a larger file; a less dynamic image will be smaller.
Jpeg uses an algorithm that describes the changes from pixel block to pixel block; small or non-existent change results in a small file; big changes (ie., lots of details) makes a big file.

Irfanview is not Photoshop but is a very easy tool to resize/resample images individually or in bulk and IT'S FREE. Or, you can use Vendio's bulk uploader and specify which size to upload, smalll, medium or large.
