The tornado sirens sounded a little after 5 this afternoon - sun was shining bright in the south , but the sky was black as night up north. About 20 mins later we got HIT! Not with a tornado but pummeled by 10 mins of heavy golf ball sized hail. Thankfully, we are ok, the house is ok (don't know about the roof) - but our poor cars are TOAST!

Wow. I've never seen anything bigger than pea size hail. That must have been very scary.
Sorry about your cars. I hope your roof is intact.

It was SCARY! The lawn is STILL white with hail nearly 3 hours later and the air is about 70 degrees. Walking is a little lumpy. Our garden is RUINED - hostas were torn to shreds, irises beaten down. All of the impatiens planted earlier this week are hopeless! Emil just planted tomatoes this afternoon and had a bunch of other plants in flats waiting to be planted when the sirens sounded - he left them in the yard and those are all lost too. SIGH. The lawn, street and sidewalks are full of leaves and new growth from the trees that broke off under the weight of the hail. Odd thing is that there wasn't much wind and no big branches fell. Our cars are dimpled like golf balls. UGH! Can they pound them smooth again or are they total losses?

I am so sorry this happened to you! I have never seen hailstones so huge. I am glad you are safe and were not outside to get hurt. Mother Nature has been throwing hissy fits lately all over the world!

Neglus, I feel so sorry that you had to go through that. It is petrifying when it happens.
We had that happen once when I lived in Calgary, Alberta. Monstrous damage to plants and roofs and aluminum siding on houses.
The Car Dealerships were like in most towns..all along one strip and the cars were destroyed. I have photos too somewhere of our Calgary Golf Ball Hail.
I found that the most scary thing was the noise. I was working late in a flat-roofed building and I though it was coming through the roof!
The only good news is that it doesn't happen too often with that force.
Do take care and know we are all thinking of you.

Wow, sorry Neglus for the damage to everything. I have never seen anything that big either. We have only had them the size of a nickel.
Will your auto insurance cover the damage?

Hi Neglus
Sorry for all your damage,
Thanks for the pics, I've never seen ice that big come down, plus it was warm outside.
When I had my sports car a big tree branch fall on it and damaged the hood, top and windshield and the insurance Co told me it was an act of God. So it was not covered. If your insurance Co don't cover damages, then check with your homeowners policy, they might cover it since it was on your property.

We haven't called the insurance agent yet - I THINK the cars are covered - I know the windshields are at any rate.
Here's another shot (the balls marked with red are golf balls):

Wow that is scary! I remember hail like that growing up in south Texas. Once we sent my Dad out with a bucket on his head to bring back some big hail stones from the yard. Bet that was noisy. I also remember my grandparents making ice cream with hail stones in the hand cranked freezer.
I have to admit that the first time I read your first post I read "our poor CATS are Toast!" Sorry about the cars but glad it was not the cats. Hope all the cars get fixed.

if you have comprehensive auto insurance, it should cover "acts of God." I hope you do and I hope it does.
I'm curious, you said the siren sounded before the hail hit. Is that just a bad weather siren or is it for other emergencies too?

Ralphie & I just went thru the worst TS+HAIL I've ever gone thru...
The winds had to be 50mpg...
I thought the building was either coming apart or some gangsta was spraying our unit with a TECH9...
Took me a few seconds to realize that it was quarter size hail being thrown against our roof & windodws by the wind...
Lasted about 30 minutes...Ralphie & I both needed new Depends...
Tis not nice to po Mother Nature!

My husband and I were at one of our accounts yesterday which is a gas company. The sky turned black and when the rain came a wind that had to be a good sixty mph blew every thing away that didn't weigh much. I was so glad I wasn't driving when that hit.

Update - one car is totaled - we came out exactly even financially and will have to find another car this week. The other car has $6000 damage and check is already in the mail. Body shops are running about 6 weeks behind so not sure when that one will get fixed.
The adjuster was out today and we will need a new roof. All covered by insurance. I have to say that my insurance company (Kemper) has been very prompt and fair about all of this.
Thundering and lightening as I type this....

That's great Neglus. Don't give the roofer any money until the job is done. The ripoff artists flock to the areas hit by storms. They take your money make some promises and run. This happened a lot after Andrew. The roofing company sent out this guy who arrived from up north looking for work. After a few days I was talking to him and he said he had never done roofing work before. Geez and before the year was up I had to have it replaced again. He would show up with his wife who loved to work in the yard so she cleaned up my garden after the 'Cane. They lived about 2 hours away with some friends and I would send them home with a beer and a wine for her. Nice people but not roofers.

Glad to hear that you are being taken care of by your Insurance Company.....and quickly too!
I hate paying Insurance premiums because everytime I have something happen it either is less than my deductible or they find an excuse not to cover it.
Kudos to Kemper Insurance!

Good advice from niel.
Most everyone wants money up front, but a financial adviser once told me that that's not a good sign, usually means they have bad credit or bad cash flow, no the money to buy supplies.
A reputable company has credit at least.

The neighborhood was full of storm chasing roofers before the hail melted! We CALLED a local firm in business for 50 years. Our roofer met the insurance adjuster and did the inspection with him to make sure he didn't miss anything. We haven't signed anything or given any money.
Nearly every house has a roofing co sign in the yard - lots of damage from that 10 minute storm!
