I stay away from that...but did have one occasion to ship an expensive item. I called a couple of local moving companies, they quoted a few different prices to "professionally" CRATE the piece. It may cost $50-100 more, but it is better then finding a large empty box that you know won't make it past the post office delivery dock. Limits 71 lbs at the PO anyways, so you probably will be dealing with UPS. UPS also recommends the "wooden/solid" crate compared to boxes for expensive pieces.

I too avoid furniture. You can always freight it out, and let Craters and Freighters etc. take care of it, and let the customer make their own arrangements. Regardless, I think it always becomes your problem and sometimes a big one.

You can always check some similar pieces to what you're thinking of selling, and see what ebay sellers say and recommend in their description and then check their FB.

I know that some sellers ship furniture via Greyhound but I don't know how it compares in cost to other methods.

I sell furniture all the time but I do try to only deal with pieces small enough to go DHL. Greyhound handles larger pieces but then you have to take it to them and the buyer has to pick it up in most cases.
I have sold pieces too large to go DHL or Greyhound and then I let Navis do the shipping.
I used Craters and Freighters once and it didn't turn out well - at all.
I box all of my items and it works out pretty good but I do pack it very well. If you have the right size box and edge protectors, it makes all the difference in the world.

go to Aspire and Igavel auctions, they always have antique furniture up for auction and see whom they use for shipping.
Also you may want to encourage your bidder to discuss shipping options before they bid, some could be dealers and they have their idea of what to do.
As to cost of shipping,I would not try to save them money and run all over the place looking for cheap shipper, they should know better before they bid.

I did sell large furniture and I used a local private shipping co. I sold a very large antique grandfathers Clock, and they came to pick it up and they did the packing and they shipped it for me. At the time it cost 650.00 to pick up, pack and ship and insure. But the buyer paid 4500.00 for the clock so to him the cost of shipping was cheap.

I only sold very old large collectibles that were very desired so shipping and crating was never a problem, The buyer's were always happy to pay whatever the shipper charged.

I found using a local shipper works out for you in many ways, if you use them often they work with you more then a shipper that is not local.

I don't know about these other shipping Co that are being mentioned here but you might want to check in your area first and get an idea of how they charge and what services they can give you. Sometimes all it takes is a few phone calls.
