Dear barparts:

We would like to tell you about a new security initiative. To help protect the Community against fraudulent access to our members’ accounts, eBay has started noting which computers members typically use to conduct their buying and selling activity.

Sometime this summer, eBay will begin checking to ensure you are logging in from the same machine you have successfully used previously, whether it is a home or business computer. If you attempt to list an item from a different computer – for example, from a PC you are borrowing in a hotel or library – eBay will ask you to confirm your identity.

The best way to confirm your identity is to choose an automated phone call – either now, or in 2 minutes -- that eBay will make to the number you have registered with us. The phone call will provide you with a PIN number to use to complete the confirmation process. This allows the system to confirm it is really you logging in to list items.

If this is not possible, we will provide alternatives such as confirming through Live Chat or receiving a call to a new number. These alternate methods will require you to provide more information (such as your secret question answer).

Most sellers will need to confirm their identity infrequently. By making sure you have a current phone number and a secret question and answer on file with eBay, you can help ensure this authentication process goes quickly and smoothly.

Have a cell phone? Registering it could save you time
If you carry a mobile phone, we encourage you to add this number as a secondary phone number in your registration details, so that we can reach you when you are away from your business or residence where you normally use your trusted computer. Your secondary number will not be shared with other members and will be treated in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Please take a minute to update your contact information.

Note: The PayPal Security Key provides additional protection for your account. Order and activate the Security Key on your eBay account if you would like an alternative way to confirm your identity.

Sincerely,

eBay Trust and Safety Department

Just another way to penalize good sellers. How much more can we take? Pretty soon you won't have the ability to list from your home computer either.

I hate those damn secret questions. I always forget which one I picked and which way I answered the question that I forgot that I picked.

Will this be a problem if you log in with a different ISP and from a different phone number? I do this often when we go to our property on the Gulf side of Florida.

Just order the PayPal Security Key - it generates random numbers which both ebay and PayPal recognize at log in.

I think it's great, as I feel more secure when using my laptop while traveling. I just hope I never lose the key.

eBay has already announced that they will not call you if you sign in with the Security Key.

Order the Security Key from your PayPal account.

I didn't get it in an email. It came up on the main Ebay page when I logged into my Ebay account.

Barparts, how does this penalize good sellers?

I would think that a hijacked account with bogus listings that have to be canceled or scams done under your ID would be a bigger penalty to a good seller. It happened to me, and I would much have preferred that a phone call to Romania/Nigeria/where-ever had been made rather than the bogus listings.

Kozersky, I've had security dongles in the past, and they're wonderful. The way our business operates (i.e., a number of people who can list), we unfortunately would require more than 1 dongle, which I don't think they allow/provide.

so why do we need a password?
soon it will be like the credit card industry, the card number, the expiration date, the billing address and now the CVV code.
BTW,this is how they catch the suspended sellers using a different seller ID to sell on Ebay, the IP address and the cookie Ebay stored on our PC for every ID we have.

hwahwa,

You still need a password in case the dongle gets into the wrong hands.

The wrong hands can have both our password and 'dongle' and our mother maiden name and favorite restaurant and city where we were born and our pet 's name and now what?

BTW, I probably mis-wrote when I called it a dongle. A dongle is a small device that connects to a computer through a port (USB, serial, etc.). Some security devices are dongles, and some are keys, freestanding devices that flash (usually 6-digit) numbers that are to be entered manually.

So where do we choose the automated phone call.
I got the message when I logged in & it addressed me by my first & last name.

How does this request by eBay affect those of us that launch auctions through Vendio? I mean, it's not like I'm listing auctions using "my own" computer, right?

I don't get it.
