I understand why you might want to add an auction to your watch list. I've done it myself.

OTOH, what is the purpose/benefit of adding a Buy It Now to a watch list? I have my book about eBay selling listed; when it sells I list another. It's a BIN, with no Best Offers. Every time I list it, I get between 2-5 watchers. It doesn't matter to me, in any material way, but it's a behavior I don't understand, which thus "makes my brain itchy." 2-5 is not a very large number, but it means that it's probably not an isolated nutcase. The item is very specific (i.e., they don't have one), so they're not watching to see if it sells or to help them set a price for the same item.

Any theories?

I can understand it if it's something that they might have, just to see what price it sells at. So, if I had a widget, I might watch a few widgets to see what they sell at, how long it took, etc. But nobody else has this book, not new anyway.

Maybe they are thinking of buy it but don't have the money this week?
Or maybe they are thinking of writing a book to sell on ebay and are keeping track of how many you sell.

Man, if they can't afford my book this week, it's time to do some serious budgeting ($13.36 with free shipping shouldn't be a stretch).

Knowing my Amazon sales would be more useful than knowing my eBay sales, as I say in the listing, I sell more on Amazon than eBay, even though the book is more expensive on Amazon. If it were me, and I wondered about whether it's worth it, I would just ASQ the seller outright.

You might be right, but my gut doesn't think so (and if you could see the size of my gut, you'd understand why I listen to it).

BTW, if anyone is wondering, don't write a book for money if you don't expect to sell a lot more copies than I have.

I sell roughly 10 per month on Amazon, a handful on eBay... not quite lunch money.

I don't mind; I didn't write the book to get rich quick or even slowly.

The watchers are probably other sellers who have the same exact item to sell.

(cashinyourcloset, sorry I spelled a word wrong. It is now corrected!)

sthoemke, not intending any disrespect, but you really must improve your reading for content

They cannot have an identical item. It is a book I wrote. They cannot have a new copy, and I would be surprised if there are enough people with used copies who would expend the effort of watching to guess what a used copy might fetch.

Easy to explain - probably just bookmarking an item they are interested in. I just did this myself last week when shopping for some door handles.

Yeah, I don't see the big mystery either. I put a bunch of stuff on my watchlist last week; some were fixed price. I didn't buy any of it.

I just want to make sure I can find the thing again if I need to. Or it may be a seller I want to track for whatever reason. I hate having to edit and delete browser bookmarks.

It's probably a good idea for sellers not to drive themselves nuts over how many watchers they have (or don't have).

$13.36 for a book written by a fellow Ebayer is not cheap, they probably hope to read it somewhere FREE!

Fluffy,

I'm not driving myself nuts over how many watchers I have or don't have. I don't care. I'm driving myself nuts trying to determine the benefit to the "watcher" of adding a low-priced, non-fungible item to their watch list. Usually, an action has some benefit, perceived or actual, otherwise the energy isn't expended.

I guess some people get itchy brains when they don't understand something, and others move on. Both responses make sense.

I always sneeze when I leave a dark room and go into bright sunlight. I've always wondered why, and have asked numerous doctors. Some doctors scratched their noggins and said they didn't know, others looked at me and gave me the equivalent response to yours. FWIW, I finally found out it's something called "autosomal dominant compelling helioopthalmic outburst syndrome" (ACHOO). I found it in a great book called "Survival of the Sickest: The surprising connections between disease and longevity." Apparently it was intended to clear out the cave dust from our respiratory systems back when we lived in caves. I feel better now

It's me Cash...I'm watching it...I have a crush!

Seriously, I have one buyer who watchs my items until she has 3-5 she wants. Then she emails me if she can pay me in 7 days. I always say that is fine and she does and then we dance again.

I have another guy who remembers when I used to ship 3 for free. For him I still do. Same thing puts on a watch until he finds the three car ads he wants.

So, waiting for something to combine?
Waiting to see if price goes down?
Waiting until Uncle John's birthday, but doesn't want to lose your site.
That's my two cents.

PS: As for sneezing I thought it was irritaion of the trigeminal nerve.

So, waiting for something to combine? >> only thing I'm selling (other than a Range Rover, but I won't combine shipping)

Waiting to see if price goes down? >> Now, that makes sense.

From wikipedia: The probable cause is a congenital malfunction in nerve signals in the trigeminal nerve nuclei. The fifth cranial nerve, called the trigeminal nerve, is apparently responsible for sneezes. Research suggests that some people have an association between this nerve and the nerve that transmits visual impulses to the brain. Overstimulation of the optic nerve triggers the trigeminal nerve, and this causes the photic sneeze reflex.

BTW, Beth, I though we had promised each other to keep our mutual crush a secret? Now my wife will know that I've been cruising eBay Outlook looking for love.

Oh, relax. I wasn't referring to you specifically. I've seen sellers go ballistic over watcher activity and I just don't get it.

I even posted a comment saying "Watchers don't matter" and a bunch of people who apparently are deeply proud of putting watches on items got upset.

Can't please anyone, it seems.

Watching is a tool. You give the same mallet to two dozen chimpanzees; some will pound on stuff randomly to see what it does. A few might chew on the handle, one will scratch his backside with it and one will attempt to put a dent in another monkey's skull.

Any resemblance of monkeys to actual eBay bidders is purely uncoincidental.

Ala Beth's "theory," I'm just going to assume that there are people out there with crushes on me. Since I can't come up with a more rational explanation (other than the mentioned thought that they might be waiting for the price to come down, maybe to hwahwa's level), at least that theory has the benefit of making me feel good.

OK Fluffy, I'm relaxed now.
